Problem - Temperature Rising/ Lots of smoke (2002-SANTE)

I just put my boat in the water for the first time this year. Started up on the first push of the button. SHOrtly after come to realize I am having issues with my temperature guage. USually I am hovering around 140. Yesterday when at idle or just trolling I was above 180. If i plane the boat i notice the temp guage goes back down to about 140. This really doesnt make any sense here. Here is my issue, i took the boat in last winter to be winterized and had the mechanic change my water impeller. Maybe it was the wrong one... ALso i noticed that the 4 beside and above the pulleys that are about 1 - 2 inches diameter had no water in the them. THe water seemed to be pumping up to past my water strainer filter. I maybe wonder if these all have to be primed. When you change the impellar does it completely empty the water out of the tubes to the point it wont suck the water back unless primed ..

ALso my boat is smoking a lot more that usual. ITs not normal. The oils are all brand new and at the perfect level. I wondered if it was smoking from the impellar having no water ... Can someone please help me here.

Based on the fact that at high rpm enough water is beinv circulated to cool the block tells me you have a loose connection (hose clamp, water strainer gasket, etc) and are drawing air, or that something is up with the RWP. Was the impeller in the RWP over the winter? if so it could have been damaged by running dry initially when you started the boat. Chaning the impeller won't drain the system, but it will prime itself once you start it.

Typically most folks drain the water out and store the impeller separately so the fins don't dry out and set over the winter, then upon recommissioning the boat in the Spring you want to lube the impeller during reassembly (i use soapy water) so its wet until the lake water hits it.

I would pull the RWP open and inspect the impeller and check all of your connections and clamps - maybe the tech missed one?

And open the strainer and make sure the o ring is in there.

Seems to be a common problem this year. Mines doing the same thing getting hot at idle. Not had chance to check all my connections out yet. Someone on here said check the strainer bowl is tight as many haVe found them loose which causes your symptoms.

Do you have the Excalibur engine, because that year they had issues with the impellor pump not priming or not staying primed. Two things help the situation is to replace the pump if the date code is early, and move the water strainer bowl lower and make the trans cooler at a 45 degree angle instead of the normal straight up and down.

I will add to this with the serial numbers for the non priming pumps are a 3 letter code and the ones affected start with ZL AA AB or AC. However, I did have a different date code on mine that was replaced, and it had the same problems.

Which serial number are you implying to. IS it directly on the motor. If so where is it on the motor ...

No, the serial number is on the cover of the raw water pump.

Thighten all hose clamps with a socket or at least a nut driver, look for the gasket in the strainer and also check it for cracks. Since it cooling at speed you're leaking air somewhere at idle. I don't know about the priming issue, but it would seem to me that once it was moving and it cooled down then priming wasn't an issue anymore. It doesn't take much air to make it overheat or run hot The smoke you were seeing was probably steam, although that can happen with the right weather conditions even when things are running right.

Also, check to make sure the technician tightened the belt to the RWP to the proper tension. If it was left loose, it will slip on the pulley at lower RPM's/Idle, thus the RWP is unable to pump enough water and the temperature will rise. At faster RPM's it will still catch the belt and turn enough to run cooler. This happened to me last summer...

not the case with the recall, trust me, I lived it. It will lose prime at idle if it is an affected pump.

With the engine at idle and in the water, check the strainer bowl for air bubbles, even little bubbles. It is surprising how little of an air leak you have to have to mess up the sucking power of the impeller. If the problem is the strainer, and you are sure you have a gasket, re-install with a little binding lube (or KY) smeared on the gasket. Otherwise, the gasket can bunch up and cause the problem.

thanks for all the help guys.

I am going to check all my hoses. I have a feeling that maybe it could be the belt as well. Friday i will check the entire thing. Its weird though because i have full water pressure to the water pump .... from the point of it getting sucked yp from the intake in the hull even past the water strainer. Holding the hose i can feel the water pumping as it should. The pipes after the impellar ... Empty ....

                              hi cc fans,

this weekend i tried a few things with the water pump system. So I noticed water was getting to the thermostat but after that it was all hot. The exhaust manifolds were empty.

I tried one thing and took the thermostat right out. I ran my engine totally cold and sure enough the engine stayed cold. NOt sure what the issue can be ..

                              1) was there not enough pressure from the impellar to open the thermostat. I would like to know if these are strickly functional from temperatures ?
                              2) the thermostat could have seized? Has anyone else had a thermostat issue. Good thing they are only 30 bucks

Can anyone also tell me if its bad to run the engine completely cold? I ran my boat for a couple hours this weekend with no thermostat ....
