    '92 Excel having problems starting

I just purchased a "new used" Nautique Excel with 600 hours on it. Got it all setup on the lift in my backyard on Lake Sarah in MN When the engine is cold, it typically starts up fine on the first crank. Last weekend we went out and sat in the bay for 30 minutes or so (with the engine off). When I tried to start it up again to go home, nothing happened. The electricity and battery seemed fine - all electrical things seemed to be functioning properly. The engine simply wouldn't start turning over. I tried and tried and tried until finally it cranked over and started it up.

The issue came up again the next day. This time we ran it across the lake and I shut if off and immediately tried to turn it back on - it didn't work. Had to try and try and try and finally it turned on.

I have found that when starting, I typically need to put it in neutral and give it some gas otherwise it shuts down (like gas isn't getting to the engine or something). After it warms up for a few seconds, it idles fine.

Any advice that people can provide would be awesome!!!

Sounds like the neutral safety switch. Jiggle the shifter in neutral the next time. The other issue could just be that the carb needs a rebuild/tune up.

On my '91 Barefoot Nautique I have that issue with the Neutral. I have to just move the throttle a little bit and it'll start then. Scared the crap out of me a few times in the river when it didn't make a sound when I tried to start it up.

Haha, I know what you mean re: scare the crap out of you! We were sitting in my bay in the dark at about 1am last Friday night and it happened. I thought we were dead in the water for sure. I'm taking her out again this weekend and will try jiggling the throttle lightly while in neutral. The last time it happened I put it in neutral and cranked the throttle way down and way up a bunch of times. Are you guys saying to pull the neutral pin out, then jiggle the throttle a just little without pulling the circle ring up?

You should not have to pull the button out. Just jiggling (I like that word) a lil forward and back, not actually engaging the throttle or tranny.

And then get it fixed, because this problem gets more and more annoying.

Fix the safety switch or the carb? Probably could use both

If you need to jiggle the throttle, then your shift cable needs to be adjusted. If the neutral position at the throttle does not perfectly center the lever at the transmission, then the NSS will think youre attempting to start in gear.
