HS has it right. Only go as aggressive as you need to. IE, dont wet sand something if it can be polished out. You can generally look at something and make an educated guess... oxidation can be tricky to judge as its hard to tell how deep it goes.

I would not waste my time with an orbital polisher. Rotary all the way on gelcoat. Its way thicker and harder than paint... gotta heat up the product. I save the orbital for the car.
