Starter problem

I have a 2002 Sport Nautique or Air Nautique(has ballast tanks, and the starter went out. It would start the boat when cold but the wheel never disengages as it is stuck forward. Would run all the time, got hot and started smoking. The engine is a GT-40 Ford, 5.8 HO, the part number on the starter is 18-5920-1,but the starter itself says that part number and reads: "I/O starter 12 V CW Ford PMGR. Not sure if they had the right part on to start with. It is Sunday so no marina's open to assist.

Anyone familiar with this and can advise.

I just had this same thing happen to me today on the exact same boat. I am assuming you got the right starter by now.

Did the starter take care of it (I have one ordered) or did you need to replace the starter relay as well?
