2005 zr6 dies but will restart

worked perfect for about 45 min than stumbled and came to a erratic idle. opened engine hood while still running and sounds like air sucking everywhere. engine would not accelerate but would still idle, but not smooth.
1 shut engine off , restart and ran for 2 sec and died.
2 tried this for for five times. same results
3 after 2 -3 min started and i ran it down the lake at wot for several 10-15 blasts, came to idle and seemed fine.
4 pulled a wake boarder after about 10-15 same thing , power cut off, came to erractic idle, pops and then died on its own.
5 after about 5-7 restarts over about 5 min got it running and went to load on trailer ran fine , then died while in idle position on trailer.
6 got home, removed ffc (fuel fitler canister), perfect clean with zero water or dirt.
7 ran in driveway with hose and bucket at idle for 20 min with no problems
8 fuel filter is clean with about 50 hours.
9 i drained ffc and pump does fill it.

tought for sure it was going to be a water issue, but is not.
    the boat is 6.0 liter zr6 2005 in a 196 ski.
what are most common issues with this engine.

i also disconnected the fuel pump on the egine while running in driveway-motor ran perfect at idle for 10 min
i then disconnected the with connector on ffc and it shut off within 2 seconds, but it did not sound the same as it did on the lake. it just shut off like you hit the stop button.

how do i go about fixing this.

Sorry, I do not know the ZR6 fuel system well enough to be useful. But, those are some of the classic signs of a dying fuel pump. They can die all at once, or intermittently have issues for a short period of time. I would start by checking fuel line pressure at idle (again, not sure if their is a pressure valve on the fuel rail of a ZR6). Good luck.

When my old boat with Zr6 did this, it was the high pressure file pump. That time my boat would not restart. I had another issue the next summer that happened just as you described and it was the throttle position sensor. It did as you described where it would restart and be an intermittent problem for two weekends and then it finally quit all together.

does my boat 2005 have both a throttle position sensor and a timing sensor. it is not drive by wire. i would think that unplugging the fuel pump and letting the motor run i could duplicate the problem. or by unplugging the high pressure. but engine continues to run with fuel pump unhooked and shuts off completely and quickly when high pressure is unplugged. it almost seems like a timing issue. i have 454 hours if that matters.

First off it is hard to duplicate the conditions on the lake when the boat is on the trailer as you cannot load down the engine. But by the description it sounds like a fuel issue possibly the low pressure pump is going bad. To check for codes you need either a codemate tester or Diacom system on a computer to pull the codes, but if you have a limited or team edition then it will show in your gauges when you have a service code. First step in diagnosing this problem should be running the boat underload with a fuel pressure gauge installed on the fuel rail and it should be on the bottom side so it is tight to fit every type of pressure gauge setup. Fuel pressure should be 58 to 64 psi at wot and 54 to 60 at idle.

are there ports to check fuel pressure. i see a shrader type port on drivers side of engine, on the top under cowling, but no others .
also i have a limited , my tach never showed any codes. does this eliminate any possible problems?

ZR6 motors had a common problem with Crank Position Sensor.

spoke with pcm today. asked about crank position sensor, they said they never see that problem and more likely it is one of the two fuel pumps. will not know to it acts again. i know have fuel pressure to check it. i also ordered both fuel pumps. i can not find my diagnostic port to check for any codes. i have three relays and two plugs that go into the ecm but no extra ports. i hope by fuel pressure is low and i could this to rest with the new pumps. i have my only vacation coming up and it relies on this boat.

On my ZR6 (04 SV211 TE), the MEFI port connector was up over by the throttle cable. There is a 10-pin connector, that has one connector with two wires connected (which goes back to the dash to show engine codes), and then another connector that really is just a "cap" if you don't have a digital dash.

I used these manuals to find the MEFI port and info on the engine codes:http://www.planetnautique.com/CorrectCraftManuals/
                    http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/MEFI/

Hope this helps... I had a simple TPS error which was easy to clear with just a paper-clip jumper.... not as complex as what you are doing.

doug, thank you. it helped alot. my tack show no codes and ran boat in driveway today for 30 min. with fuel pressure gauge attached to port. showed 63 pounds at idle the entire time. engine ran perfect. next i unplugged the low pressure pump and psi dropped to 59-60 and still ran perfect. i then crimped the fuel into from the tank with needle nose pliers and within 3 min the engine did the exact same thing as it did on the lake. to a tee. back fired , popped , hissed, and continued to run at idle. i shut it off and tried to restart, same thing. this is good news for me, because it acted the same way. i have both fuel pumps in my office, they will go in wednessday. problem should be solved.

got my pumps from white lake. the high pressure pump looks like it was in someones boat before i got it. not to happy about that. it was just in a plane open bag.

thanks for the help all. i will test boat on weekend
