    Changing a fuel filter.

    Gang,

I've read the instructions in the manual, but still not sure I want to mess with gas. Anyone have a video or something they have seen posted. Before I just had to pull the boat a couple hours to get service, now I have to drive 1.5 hours each way.

You bugged me last year for this and I mentioned to another PN member that I would make a video on this. I was hoping to do it in the next two weeks but I am off the map busy and any time for the boat needs to be using it.

If you have the band (you should), it is easy.

Get a funnel and cheap PVC hose and run the hose out the builge to a mason jar.
Pull the plug out of the bottom and let the fuel drain into the funnel
Draining fuel is like picking your nose....you'll want to see what comes out.
Loosen the band, then twist the canister back and forth as you pull it down. Carefull....the pump and filter are dangling from the wire.
    Set aside canister
    Twist old filter off pump
Clean and inspect everything - remove all old o-rings (I think only 1? )
Put gas safe sealant on your plug and install it in the canister before putting the canister on - don't over tighten (it is not a head or flywheel bolt)
Lather the new o-ring in oil then put it on the canister
Slip the filter on the dangling pump
Slip the canister on and re-tighten the band.
You can on/off the start key to prime the canister but the last time I did mine I put it in the water and it cranked right up.

(I probably could have changed mine in the time it took me to write this email.)

Here is an acceptable thread sealant. I picked some up at either Pep Boys or Auto Zone.

Web page says "for fuel lines" MSDS says resist gasoline.

Who is instructing to disconnect the fuel supply line? ....they should be sacked.

If I have the band, you have the band.

I'm not sure what year they switched? 05 threaded? / 06 Banded? They may have just switch when they ran out of threaded.

The instructions are the same for threaded except one needs a 48" pipe wrench and college lineman on steroids to get it off.

Some years? 05,06? have a pre-filter as shown in item 21 of the sketch below.

In the pic on the right, you can see the band just below the black housing. If you look closely, there is a black plastic slip-on cover protecting the threads of the band's bolt. Its just to the left of the fuel supply line and directly above the "C" in "cell" on the label.

I always drain mine into a gallon zip lock bag.

The PCM manual talks about the fuel lines.

You can go at the FCC two ways (maybe even more). You can remove the top 2 fuel lines, remove the FCC from its mount (I believe there are 3 screws holding it to its mount), and with the locking ring removed, separate the canister a bit and you should be able to just pour the gas in the FCC out into a container. This enables you get the gas out without having to remove the drain plug underneath which is what I do cuz on my 211, there really isn't enough room to get under the FCC to remove the drain plug. If you have relatively easy access to your FCC plug, then go that route and you shouldn't have a need to remove your fuel lines

"They may have just switch when they ran out of threaded."
This is the most likely scenario.

Obviously, respect, and clean up any spilled gas in the bilge. To make this easier, drain all the water you can out of the bilge. Even if you spill some gas, get a box fan, and set it up to blow air through the bilge, and engine compartment for a few hours, or overnight if necessary. If you are in doubt, turn on the blower for the boat, walk to the back of the boat, on the trailer, and smell the exhaust air coming out of the bilge. When you cannot smell gas, you are probably safe.

A good long road trip, on a hot day with the cover off the boat, will also remove almost all residual gas fumes for the boat.

bxroads has a 2004 with threads and my Feb 2006 has banded. Maybe we can find two people with 2005's ...one with threaded and one with clamped.

I won't say where but I did find this on the pre-filter:

EFI engines, located on the inlet side of the low pressure fuel pump. Only used between S/N's 470001 - 473064 (CC 2005 - 2006)

Just wanted to let the forum know and those who search in the future what a dirty fuel filter looks like and yes it can be a source of engine trouble! This one had 220 hrs on it. I planned on changing it in the fall but thought like many others that the every year change was over kill. I mean who changes them in your car???? Anyway I had my 08 San 210 loaded up pretty heavy with ballast and people last monday and she struggled more than I thought it should to get on plane. Also when making turns it would sometimes die/lose speed come of plane. At first I thought it a Zero Off issue. But then it started doing it during runs, did this about 5 times. Anyway we where done for the evening and I drained everything an made the trip back to the launch and it died out 2 more times on way back to launch running at about 28mph. I changed out both the inline and fcc filter and all is good again! Gets up on plane much better now and no more cutting out while riding. Click image for larger version
