    Dripless Packing & Drive shaft

    Ok here is my LATEST delema. When taking my transmission out I was having a hard time pushing the shaft back and getting the Dripless packing shaft Seal forward to make room. And like a cave man I beat up on the shaft seal that go's against the dripless packing gland. Its the chrome piece in the photo.

    Well after beating it like a red headed step child I noticed some marks that looks like they wont fair nice against my dripless packing gland. After figuring out what a Idiot I was I did my best to try and sand out the mark's
    It has me thinking that I should remove the metal seal and either turn the marks out or replace it. I have a single taperd prop shaft, That's the kind that has the pressed shaft coupler @ the transmission. What's involved in taking off the Shaft Coupler at the transmission side. The dealers says its a P.I.N.T.A and they just cut the shafts off at a cost of $400. I was wishing this could be avoided and someone had a magical solution to my problem. LOL

      I think you press it off using bolts and a socket or something.

      Unbolt
      slide back
      insert socket or tool
      tighten w/longer bolts until is pushes through.

      Then to get it back on, you have to soak the coupler in the oven and maybe the shaft if the fridge and then slide them back together.

      I think for 400 or less, you can get a new doubled tapered shaft and coupling from www.nautiqueparts.com

      As the dealer says, you just cut the old shaft. you'll need a few extra blades for that.

        AirTool is on the right track. Unbolt the coupler from the transmission. Slide the shaft rearward far enough to place a socket between the coupler and the transmission. Replace a few of the coupler/trans bolts with longer bolts (needed since the socket is between the coupler and trans) and tighten them which will pull the coupler from the shaft. It's a slow process but works well. When you are ready to reinstall the coupler on the shaft the coupler will need to be heated in the oven to expand it (*400+) so it will slide over the shaft (it is a near zero clearance fit). And work fast so be prepared ahead of time. Or buy a new double tapered shaft/coupler (easier).
