Installing prop for the first time?

So I sent my prop off to be repaired over the winter and I am trying to reinstall it. I was following the instructions from the owners manual but when I install the castle nut I can't get the cotter pin to line up unless I back the nut off about one face. Am I doing something wrong or does e castle nut not need to be tight? The owners manual says to tighten it with a wrench, but I can't keep the prop from spinning

    Thanks Jason

You can insert a 2x4 or 4x4 between the prop and hull to hold the prop while you torque the nut. Make sure you first install the prop w/o the key and mark the shaft. You will need to reinsert the key and seat the prop to the same line. Once you have done this you can then install/torque the castle nut and install a fresh cotter pin.

It is permissible to back off on the castle nut after torquing it down, in order to get the cotter pin on. The taper is what holds the prop on- the castle nut and cotter pin are there as fail safes.

I would recommend lapping the prop on to ensure you have a good fit between the prop and shaft.

Ditto on the lapping. Be sure to use FINE not the coarse compound.

Also, I disagree on blocking with lumber. If you are not using a torque wrench, put leather gloves on and hold the prop with your hand. Using a wrench or ratchet that is about a foot long is all you need. I can't remember the torque spec but it is relatively low. If you blocked the prop and get on it with the prop wrench, the nut is too tight.
