    need CC trailer axle

    So my trailer wheel passed me on the highway on the weekend. The good news first - no damage to boat or anything other than the axle. The bad news is this axle is a 'drop axle', and very hard to source. This is a 1996 correct craft 'drive on' trailer for a supersport. Does anybody know who can supply one of these?

    its kind of a mystery how this happened. i've kept up with the grease. the outside bearing that failed dried out, but the inner race, and other side were fine. its only the second time trailering this year. either water got in there, or last year when i had a belt shift on that tire, the vibration did something. i'll be pulling the wheels off every spring from here on in.

    I may have a single axle ramlin trailer for sale in early/middle July. It is designed for a 2002 super sport/super air with six lug wheels and a torsion axle. I am going to be selling it cheap so if you need it for parts let me know. I just need to wait until my dual axle trailer is ready.

      thanks ers906, i'll consider that. is your trailer only suitable for parts?
      a guy at ramlin told me this is most likely a 'solid bar v-bend 5200lb axle'. he said he has never been able to source one. he went on to say if i were to retro fit something, i would need a torsion or spring axle with a v-bend, but doing all that is quite the job, and wouldn't be cheap. i'm waiting to see if a machine shop can do anything for me. if they can't, my gut feeling is telling me i need a new trailer. i do have insurance on the trailer, so i'm going to start looking into that.

        I had a trailer shop build me new galvanized drop axles for my tandem trailer. I took them one of the old axles and they took measurements and built them. I wouldn't think you need a new trailer.

          The trailer is solid and can be used, I just didn't know if you had a single or dual axle, and if you needed just the axle. I am planning on selling it cheap since I really do not have the room or need for an extra trailer. There is minor cosmetic damage to the left fender from a blown tire, but I still have my boat on it and use it to tow about an hour to the lake (each way) several times weekly. It has starboard bow stop pads and fender pads which are nice and no maintenance. Also has new bunks and bunk carpet with stainless fasteners. The carpet on the steps around the fenders will need to be replaced in the future though. Let me know if you want me to send pictures. All this being said, if your insurance is covering a new trailer, I would recommend picking up a dual axle, there is a galvanized one for sale currently on this site. What type of boat do you have?

            Sounds like the same failure I had on my '99 single trailer. I was close enough that Ramlin was able to retro fit a new style torsion axle assembly on there. They said the supplier for those solid axles were long gone. Depending on your location, you may find a good local shop that could fix it. I was able to put a "splint" on mine for the 500 mile trip to Orlando and it was no problem. A good shop could do that and weld it back.

              You can try this place. They are in Bradenton Florida, just below Tampa. I used to live over there, and they have always had anything I needed. If you don;t see it in their catalogue, they can probably find it.

                Eric, just noticed you are in AZ. That's going to be too far as I'm in Canada. I'm trying to find a machine shop around here. The tricky thing is that the axle is square steel, and the ends get machined down to the spindles out of the solid piece. There doesn't seem to be the option of inserting a new spindle down a tube.
                It looks like what caused all this was a seal let water in. So it looks like I'll be pulling the wheels off a couple times a year from here on in. This is turning out to be one of thoses lessons where 'hard' isn't good enough. **** axle has to be one of a kind.

                  Have you tried calling quality trailer? They produced the axles for a long time I believe. Www.qtrailer.com.

                    Try an RV repair company. RVs use various axle configurations, (yes, and different brake configurations as well) But, a good RV shop will at least know where to source an axle that will work with your needs.

                    On a separate note... I worked in the RV industry for many years. And, we made lots and lots of money from folks who thought that 'bearing buddies' actually take the place of pulling your bearings and packing them 1x per year. The best time to do this, is at the END of the season, so if there is water in the grease, it doesn't sit there all winter long. Bearing buddies don't work, they are a false sense of security. The spindles with the grease zirk in the tip are a bit better, but still do not do the job properly. There is no substitute for pulling the bearings, cleaning, inspecting and packing them. Nobody wants to ruin a nice vacation with bearing failure... I always felt bad for the folks on a trip that pulled into our shop... I spent many summer NIGHTS giving up my time off to help folks out, and not ruin a vacation.... but I didn't feel bad about charging a fair dollar for my time either.
