Rotary Steering cable Install. Wont go RIGHT!

Bought and installed a new cable (rotary style) for my 1990 Sport. It seemed to be installing just nicely and now Im stuck. I have inserted the cable through what i have been calling the rotary drum (I'm sure that isn't the technical term) all the way so the nut is able to fasten from the cable to the rotary drum. I have realigned the the steering clamp mount on the end of the cable towards the rudder. The rudder turns left to what i view to be an appropriate degree but then only goes right a slight amount past dead center. Any ideas, I'm fresh out.

did you remove the rudder support tube from the clamp block in the rear of the boat?

Keep in mind that with the torque of the prop the rudder isn't straight when you are underway. It may be right the way it is, If you can find another boat you can check to see if the travel is the same. If not it can be adjusted by moving the steering tube within the clamp block.
