1985 2001 351 with holley j tube carb no start and fuel leakage issues.

Will try to get all the info in here as possible so please bear with me! At the end of last years boating season we started developing issues with the boat. First thing we noticed was after shutting off the boat fuel would drip and fill up both front and rear barrels of the carb this could only been seen with the airfilter off. Also when we started looking into this problem while trying to give the boat alittle throttle to start the motor fuel would shoot out of the front j tube and hit the choke butterflies and spray everywhere. The boat would still start up and run but the last time out soon as you applied some throttle an load was put on the motor it would start to stumble badly. The only way to get thru it was to throttle past the issue which would at least keep the motor running but not smoothly. So this winter we went out and purchased a carb rebuild kit,new wires, plugs and coil. Got everything installed and now we cant get the boat to start up at all. We doubled and triple checked everything as far as firing order plug gaps and making sure all the points are correct and timing set properly and everything gd to go. We have good spark to all plugs. After the carb rebuild we were able to stop the fuel dripping and filling up the rear carb barrel. But the front will still drip pretty badly after the motor being turned over. With the carb rebuild we did install new needle and seats and made sure the floats were adjusted correctly and even tried playing with the adjustments a tad to see if that would help with the fuel dripping but had no luck. The worse issue is when trying to start the motor and featherin the gas alittle fuel will shoot out the front j tube and hit the choke butterfly and spray everywhere. Its a gd amount of fuel being sprayed out. We cant figure out whats causing the fuel to shoot out with such force and in the amounts that it does or how fix it. Any help would be greatly appericated. Our next step more then likely is going to order a completely new carb for the boat. So we have 2 problems the fuel leakage and no start. Not sure if this is the same problem with differnt syptoms or 2 completely differnt issues. Any thing that I left out that i can add to help please let me know. Really want to get this figured out and its getting the best of meeee!!!!! One last thing we are in the process of draining all the fuel from the tank and fuel lines and putting fresh fuel in and see if we can get it to start.. Will keep posted. Thanks in advance for all the help it greatly appericated Dave

Wow that is hard to read mate!

    Before I bought my 210, I owned a 1980 Ski Naut.
The early PCMs are fantastic, reliable engines but original carbies are now getting very old. I would suggest you take your own advice & buy a brand new marine holley.

I am in Australia so parts are much harder to come by, but I found a good carby builder & had him set the new carb to my engine.
When I got the new carb, I bolted it on, primed & the boat started & idled without adjustment - just as he said it would.......

So sorry for the hard read was using my iphone to type it all out. What is it that you guys think is causing that fuel to shoot out of that front J tube with so much force? Was hoping the carb rebuild would have fixed that concern but didnt get that lucky.... So it looks like a new carb is in order. Just hoping that im not over looking somthing and there is another issue that cause that fuel to come out. A new carb cant hurt no matter what cause we plan on keeping the boat for a long time. So its a great investment. Thanks for all the advice Dave and sorry for the hard read was in a hurry just trying to get it posted as fast as I could to get replys asap!!!!!!!

          A New replacement would be:

          Holley 4160 Marine Carb
          600 CFM
          p/n 0-80319-1

          You can find it here:

          http://www.jegs.com/i/Holley/510/0-80319-1/10002/-1
The lake is calling and I must go.

The fuel will leak from the J-Tubes if the fuel bowls overfill.

They can overfill due to: -
1/ Stuck open needle (most common cause)
            2/ Bowl float sunken
            3/ Incorrect float adjustment
4/ Excessive fuel pressure - any more than 7 PSI will force the needle open.

Unless you have recently replaced your fuel pump with a nigh pressure electric one just before your symptoms started, you can disregard that one.
I think it is more likely that the carb is literally flaking apart inside, causing the needle to stay open.

Get the new carb - you'll then be able to go riding & not worry about whether she'll run or not.
