    98 Sport GT40 - intermittent stalling

    Hi All,

My 98 Sport GT40 (658hrs) has an intemittent stalling issue all of a sudden. We use it for hours skiing the slalom course with no issues it runs very cool and perfect. This past Saturday we skied and she ran for over 3 hours perfectly. I always lift the engine hatch to let her cool off while we pull the course in and did so this past Saturday. When we were finished I started her up to head back to our dock got up on plane and about a minute or 2 later she sputtered out and lost power. This is the 4th time this year this has happened, first time after skiing and the remedy has been lift the engine hatch for about 10 mins and after about 5 tries she starts and runs perfectly again. All routine maintenance is done throughout the year and I have a new raw water pump, relays, fuel filter, battery etc. and I use 89-93 octane. This happened yesterday later in the day when we were out again. We were idiling around the lake for about 45 mins and then sat and drifted for about 2 hours or so. Started her up to go in due to storms rolling in got going about 25 mph or so and then she sputtered out and stopped. We sat for about 10 mins and after 5 or so attemps she started right up and ran perfect again. I am sure I am not the only one that has had this issue and hope I can get some help or good insight here before I decide to put it on the trailer and take it to the PCM mechanic. I appreciate the feed back and help here.

I'd love to hear the reply to this post as well. I have a 99 Pro Air with a GT-40. Mine also runs well for a period of time and runs great the whole time we use it as long as we don't turn it off. If we turn it off, it will start and run for a short period of time and then die. After a few minutes and cycling the fuel pump a few times, it will start and run great until it's shut off again. Last weekend, I checked the Fuel Control Cell after it died and it was empty. This sounds pretty similar to your issue. I can't tell if it's a relay issue or a fuel pump issue. Can't wait to see if someone has a solution.

This is a long shot, but I had some issues not exactly like yours but give these a shot. Ethanol treatment for your fuel. Star brite and lucas make great treatments. Use it in EVERY tank. There is a blog about this on white lake marines site. My boat vapor locked on me once this year and hasn't since I started the treatment. Also I know it sounds funny but make sure your gas cap is sealing all the way, once mine died it wouldn't start back up. Realized the gas cap wasn't fully on, tightened it up and vroom!

I had a problem just like this year in My 97 Sport. Emptied the Gas tank, replaced both pumps filter, etc. Then I finally found a loose auxillary connection coming off the battery. It would run most of the time but if you did something like open the hatch or move around in the boat it would set just right at die. Then if you moved again it would work. It took me three weeks to figure this out. So maybe you just have a loose connection. Check your wiring, relays connections etc. It could be as simple as that.

          Hi All,

Thanks for the replys here. I treat my fuel everytime I fill up with Marine Ethanol Stabil and use Lucas once or twice a season so my fuel is fresh and we burn it up pretty quickly. My fuel cell is full when this happens as I check the shrader valve and drain at the bottom so I am good there. I spoke to Vince at SKIDIM and he has always been great. We diagnosed this as the low pressure pump failing which after 14 years I can see this happening. I will take it out and run it and put a fuel pressure test to it and if the symptom happens testing the fuel pressure is the real way to check on the pump failure. Also check the anit-siphon valve and clean it up if needed. He said the ethanol is a real problem as most of us know and keep doing what I have been doing with the Stabil or use non-ethanol fuel which is available but limited to find. I have the pump on order and will install it this weekend and will let you all know if this is the fix. Thanks again

My boat recently had a similar issue and it was the low pressure pump as well. I think you are on the right track. From what I have been told, the pumps will start to become intermittent as they start to fail. This is especislly true as they heat up. That might not be what yours is doing, but I would still replace it... They are about $140 and pretty easy to replace.

Fuel pump high or low could be the problem. Although high pumps do not tend to fail after a set duration and then from sitting suddenly work. They just fail.

If your low pressure is intermittently failing I would think to look for loose hoses. An air bubble no bigger than a jelly bean can cause a lock in the line. Your system will then of course not start until the heat has dissipated. Look for cracks around the clamps or on the hose line to eliminate this as a probably cause. A pin hole crack at the base will allow air to seep. It does not take alot.

The next thing on your process is to do a compression check. Run it at home, take a compression reading on the fuel line. Run it on the water (not that you want to break down) and when it does bust out another test. If you have the same compression, your problem is not fuel.

I would then take the search to an electrical test. I have written a few posts on this topic. CHECK FOR BAD GROUNDS! we have boats and they get corrosion we ignore or rust which is also fun. Corrosion areas on a ground are check #1. next are corrosion on relays, and your master solenoid. I personally have been stranded with intermittent failure with poor conduits.

hopefully it is just your low fuel pressure. BTW I think to test this you take the line off that goes to the fuel rail, put it in an empty water bottle. Flip the switch to on (do not turn the motor over), the fuel will fill up. If it fills your pump is working

Here is how to check the fuel pressure.

The 8th post in the thread contains some specifications of the pressure and the flow rate of the low pressure pump.
