    Rudder doubt!

    Hi People!

Iīm a spanish guy and i have an SAN 210 TE 2003! Recently i brougth my boat to a workshop to repairing a important breakdown in the transmission, and when they send to me the boat (in a trailer) the rudder was disassembled. Now, i have a doubt, because i think that the workshop peole lost something!

I only have the rudder and the arm rudder, but, the only system of fixing between them is the lateral bolt of the rudder arm? Shouldnīt be another piece in the top off the rudder? I think this because the rudder has a threaded hole inside!

I show to you a picture to explain better my dude.

Thank you very much for read to me!

There is also a bolt and a large washer on top of the rudder, the washer is larger than the diameter if the Pittman arm. (Pittman arm is the lever with the square hole that clamps on to the rudder)
Both bolts are safety wired to each other, so to prevent either bolt from getting loose. Two bolts were used so the rudder cannot fall out of the boat.
If the rudder falls out, water will run in, possibly faster than the bilge pump can pump it out.

I recommend you do not run the boat until the rudder has all the parts!

By the way, without a rudder and your boat taking on water, you will not be able to steer the boat, and because of propeller torque your boat without a rudder may only go in circles.

Do you think that i could put a normal bolt (that has the size off the original) with a normal washer? Or will be better contact with my dealer for replace the original? The question is that i donīt know if i colud buy this bolt separately!

The bolt is stainless steel. There are many types of stainless steel, some alloys are strong, and many are not. Also, the correct bolt has a hole drilled sideways through the head for the safety wire. If you find a bolt, made of stainless steel, without a hole, if it is easy to drill the hole, you have probably found an alloy of stainless that is not very strong. If you find a strong alloy of stainless, it will be difficult to drill the hole without the proper new drill bit with angles cut specifically for stainless steel, and even then it will be difficult.

Get the bolt from Correct Craft. Get the proper washer too.

LOL, you guys better start including a ruler or something to show the scale of your pictures in your correspondences... thats the entire rudder port! Its upside down in the picture- the large flange goes on the external side of the hull.

Here is a picture of the rudder port installed, with the tiller arm attached. This may help explain things.

There is nothing special about that top bolt or the fender washer. You just need the proper thread size and pitch, and the proper bolt length- and of course, one that has a provision for a lockwire on it. You could pick up a stainless bolt from McMaster if you knew the size that you were looking for.
