Perfect pass is "hunting" with full ballast in SV211 w/ ZR6

    Hey all,

I have finally had time to really play with my SV (2004 with ZR6 motor) and really use the ballast and perfect pass (Wakeboard Pro 6.5)

The perfect pass works well, and can hold 10.5 with full ballast and 9 people when surfing. When wakeboarding with no ballast it tends to over-shoot a bit if I don't "let off" the throttle before it gets up to the target speed (18 - 22mph), but once it settles it seems find.

But when I did try to have someone wakeboard with full ballast (just stock) the PP seemed to have a lot of trouble holding the speed and kept hunting back and forth by about 1mph. Is this just normal, or should I work to adjust it?

I've read through the manual and really didn't get much of a clue as to what to do. We are using just basic wakeboard mode and I have never done anything to it, but I have no idea what the previous owner had done.

Recommendations? Anybody with another ZR6 been through this?

    Thanks!

I don't the ZR6 but wakeboarders can really slow the boat when they pull hard and the PP makes adjustments to keep the speed within range. Could the "hunting" that you experiencing be from the pull of the boarders?

Look at the manual for the kdw setting adjustment. As you add weight you may need to raise the kdw in order to make the PP more aggressive. I had the same issue with my 236 when we loaded it down and raising the kdw did the trick. As far as overshoot on takeoff, that is pretty common in my experience.

I will check what the kdw is... and maybe play with it. It seems to be a bit slow, so maybe making it more aggressive is better. I am learning to back off the throttle a bit as I approach the target speed. So far it has never complained that it doesn't have enought throttle to keep the speed.

I will also pay attention to see if it is based on when the rider is cutting. I had noticed that when I pulled someone on a different boat when they were doing slalom, but this was when wakeboarding.

I'll play with it tomorrow, and let you know.

I've played with my settings and they do have quite an effect....but I've always seem to be happier in RPM mode.

Well, I found the KDW setting and it was down at 60, which is lower than the manual says is a starting point. I adjusted it up to 80 and can feel a difference... but now it definately pulls hard to compensate... maybe too hard.

I will play with RPM mode as well and see what makes sense. I'm also getting better at backing off just before the PP takes over so that the PP just creeps it
up to the hold speed rather than me zooming past it. So I should admit half of this may be driver error.

Oh well, I guess this is something I need to play with. PP is the greatest invention tho, becuase before it my wife never wanted to pull me, and now between that and a good tower mounted mirror she is feeling much more comfortable.

1 MPH is not that bad, I find the end of the rope is what maters and if you don't notice it there it's fine, even if the people in the boat feel it hunting a little. We foil, so the load is different than wakeboard, but I've found that MPH mode pulls set speed and above. RPM pulls set speed and below. The higher the RPM's the closer to the speed you stay so someone riding at 26 or 27 gets a little more consistent pull than 22 or 23.

When I had perfect pass I always had better performance when easing off throttle as I reached target speed. So I think maybe what you are experience is pretty common. I don't know.

I had this problem on my 07 220 ZR6 with perfect pass. Flash updates, stargazer, adjusted all the settings and finally gave up after 3 seasons. The heavier the boat was loaded the bigger variation in speed. Zero off fixed all my problems and now the boat will hold speed within .2 mph with 3 people in the boat or 10 + 2500# of ballast. It took me a long time to spend the $1500 but I just don't think the perfect pass software is capable of handling a heavily loaded boat.

Well, the good news is that I don't run that fully loaded much. I have it adjusted now so that when I am slaloming I don't notice it as long as my wife remembers to "ease up" as she is approaching my target speed. Once the boat has settled, I have no clue if it is adjusting from behind it, so that really is the key.

It holds well for surfing at 10.5 even when heavily loaded.

I will lower my standards a bit to remember that this is SO much better than trying to do it by hand on an I/O. Amazing how quickly I have become spoiled. A $1,500 upgrade is not in the cards... at least until a lot of other updates are done.

Glad to hear the KDW adjustments made an improvement for you.

I live in northborough too and we typically use Fort Meadow Resevoir in Marlboro/Hudson. Where do you go? Do you have that great looking blue 211? If so I think my brother Dan at BBS Powersports recently did some work for you. Your boat got a lot of envious stares from the locals when he was out water testing it a few weeks back. Great looking boat, have fun with it!

I was told Fort Meadow is marlboro/hudson "resident only"... how do you get out there?

Yes, that is my Black/Blue 211 they were testing. I had some overheating problems and they were testing it and re-adjusting the rudder/steering.

I will PM and we can try to connect and swap pulls.

I am a member at a club on the lake that has a private ramp, docks, picnic tables, etc. it's a great set up that has treated me great over the years but unfortunately they are not accepting new members at this time.

Pretty sure they are not very strict at the public ramp when it comes to checking residency. What lakes have you been using?
