Hello, does anyone know off hand how long of a cable I have and would it not be easier to attach the new cable to the old and pull it through rather than using a rope? Also it says not to take apart the rack (on the rack) is this just so you will spend the extra $75 on the rack or can you really screw something up. If that's the case I'll have to use the rope. By the way read old posts and now it's the cable (not rudder)but one guy mentioned using a drill to clean the old grease out of it and put new in, is this feasable. Might try it on the new cable but this one is 8 years old and is probably shot.

RE: Steering cable length
You do not want to take apart the rack. You will have to pull the cable out one way and reverse the direction when you put the new one back in. Your cable isn't too hard to replace. Once you have all of the floor boards removed, you have pretty easy access to it all.
As far as the grease, you want to drop the rudder and regrease the shaft. More than likely, there is no grease left on it. On the cable, put a squirt or two in the end and work it in there by moving the cable back and forth a couple of times. Then you can tighten the nut.

Yeah looked on skidim.com $130 for just cable and $200 with the rack. Don't mind paying extra for the rack but didn't want to if it wasn't necessary. Already have the old one apart (cable not rack) just waiting to see about the best way to pull the new one through. Yeah I miss my one finger steering.1997 SuperSport GT-40

The right steering cable is 19.5 feet and it is the narrow rack version. Thde rack does not come off of the cable unless you totally destroy the cable. To getr the right on you will have to get it from the Nautique dealer because it is a Correct Caft exclusive and do not use a longer or shorter cable because it does not have enough travel to steer the boat properly.

Call Mid-Ohio. If they have anymore in stock that they bought last year you will get an excellent deal. There was a price increase in 05 so the 19.5' Nautique specific cable is over $200 now.
The lady I spoke with at Mid-Ohio was very nice and sold me one that they bought last year for $174 - 15%. The total came to $158 shipped. That is a very standup thing for a dealer to do to not pass on the price increase for an item they bought at the lower price. It would have been just as easy for them to say there was a price increase and sell me the cable at the higher price and pad their profits.
