2002 196 gt 40 power loss out of hole, good planed out.

Okay, a lot of you guys are really knowledgable on these motors, I would appreciate any and all input. Our gt 40 has run perfectly for 1200 hrs., all of a sudden it has lost 30-40% of its power out of the hole. This happened instantly in between pulling skiers. it is not so bad with a driver and pulling a 90# kid, but 550 #'s crew and a 200# skier it is really bad. So, more load, worse it is. On the upside, once planed out it is fine, the times (PP) are dead on through the course at 28-34 mph. it seems to accelerate just fine once planed out. it starts, idles, and runs great, no misses, gas smell or anything else weird. I have always changed plugs, wires, cap, etc. every 2 years, this spring was replacement year, ran great for 20 hrs before the problem started. I then ran out the gas, filed with non-ethanol premium, injector cleaner, changed fuel filter,(which still looked new) I will check the timing this morning. What do some of the sensors do? or is there a timing advance /retard thingy? I am running out of ideas.. We even sat on the motor and had evening cocktails hoping good karma would fix it. Thanks for all your ideas.

    gettin' pudgy,

If my memory serves me correctly, there is an additional fuel pump with a check-ball mounted very near the fuel tank. If you ran out of fuel you may have starved this pump of fuel. If the pump is starved of fuel it can overheat quickly. I am no expert on these engines but I would think that you are asking for maximum fuel flow when accelerating out of the hole. If the pump near the fuel tank is not pushing enough volume, it will limit the power your engine can produce. I had an 02 SNCB with the GT40 and I think you could hear the additional pump come online when I punched in my code just before hitting the start button. If I am incorrect with my information, someone with more experience will be along shortly to point you in the right direction. You may also want to post your issue on Correct Craft Fan. There are tons of gear-heads on that site that are always willing to help.

Good luck, I hope it's an easy and inexpensive fix

    Matt

Did you ever solve your problem? Ran my '99 Sport Nautique dry and have the problem you describe. Just spoke with a mechanic at the boat show who said that the injectors are lubricated by the fuel; running dry can score the injector and require replacement.
