You want to use stainless screws, self tapping. Do not use unbranded from a "home warehouse". Buying from a consumer "marine" type stor probably will not get you good stainless screws, either.
Go to a company like Fastenal, or a industrial bolt supplier in the city where you live.
Here is the dirty little secret about stainless steel. To make stainless steel, you need to add various rare and expensive elements to the steel alloy, like vanadium, and chromium. To make steel strong, you add carbon. Carbon added to steel tends to make it rust faster, so to make cheap stainless steel, you take the carbon out of the steel, and then you need less of the other elements to make the steel "stainless" or resistant to rusting.

What about bronze wood screws? I just went to West Marine and noticed they had those in their hardware section. They are abot $2.50 each. How about legnth of the screws and or thickness? Only reason im not sure is because my swim platform came seperate from brackets and dont know what screws were in there.

Wood screws seem to be as old as man but (because of the taper) if they work a bit loose then everything gets sloppy. I just don't like them. I'd rather have a straight screw with a counter-sunk head.
I don't see a big problem with brass/bronze but they will probably turn color and the heads are very soft so the screwdriver slots strip out easily.
