    Ignition Fault Code

I had some corrosion in my Dist. Cap Saturday and made the boat skip. So I cleaned the cap and installed a new rotor button. The boat runs great but I have an Ingnition Fault Code on the dash now. I spoke to the dealer and they say it will Clear itself after a few cranks. I ran it the whole next day and the fault never went away but the boat ran good. Has anyone ever had this happen and if so did it clear or am I going to have to take it in to get the code cleared. Oh It's a 2003 SAN with the 330.

Ok... ran it all weekend and the fault is still there. I spoke with the guy at the local Malibu dealership and he is a PCM dealer also. He said he may be able to clear the code. Does anyone know what ECM is in a 2003 SAN. I would take it to Whitelake Marine but it's about 2 1/2 half hours away, the Malibu dealer is 30 min.

Do you have the flat distributor cap? i.e. the 8 legged "crab" ? I believe so if you have the 330.

If you do, you may have turned the distributor a hair and now throwing the camshaft retard code.

To clear the code (after proper setting) you have to turn on the ignition then run the throttle to full and back.

You might just go out there and see if you can turn the distributor. If you can't, maybe it is not the problem. If you can, your cam retard needs to be set....which "requires" a scan tool.

However: I set it in my Tahoe by going one direction until the code came on - and marked the position. Then cleared the code and went the other direction until the code came on and marked the position. Then I put the distributor in the middle of the marks. IIRC, you have to do this a little at a time and start/stop the engine. I believe the camshaft retard position test occurs at start up. You have to clear the test each time by key on and moving the throttle (maybe full throttle). I remember being able to move the distributor out of spec and the light not coming on until the next start up.

Oh...... yeah I have the flat dist. 330Ex..... Well now that you say that. I did notice a clean spot where it looked like the bolt that holds the dist. down was, and may have moved ( like where it was pained over the bolt and there is a clean circle there)never looked down there before to see if it was already like that. Can they just loosen up and move alittle? It runs just fine. Plenty of power and not running rough. Also I had corrosion in the cap and I noticed it looked like two screens in the bottom of the dist. stopped up. Would that account for my corrosion in there? thanks for the info.

You will not notice a change in performance with just a few degrees of change....but it needs to be corrected.

If you are going to have "them" do it, make them connect the tool and set it live.

If you want to do it yourself, you can probably follow my procedure.

Corrosion inside is normal. Plugged screens "could" promote it faster since it is more difficult for the water vapor to evaporate.

Read this bulletin although it doesn't say how to reset the code....in there procedure, code reset is automatic with the scan tool.
