    Diagnose this noise

I have a grumble noise coming from my tranny (or v-drive) when the boat is in gear @ idle (~600RPM). In neutral it sounds good and in gear above ~900 RPM it sounds good. It's been there since I got the boat last summer, but never got around to looking into it because everything works great (2010 SANTE 210 w/75hrs).

Can anybody help tell me what's going on and how to fix it? I attached a video you can hear the noise when I ask the wife to put it in gear (idle ~600RPM).

Not sure But I would call fantastic finish marine. They are inboard tranny experts.

I tried for a year to get someone to find this for me including taking a mechanic out and no luck. Just recently I changed my prop to a 1235 and the noise disappeared. I suspect the prop that I had paid someone to put on was not tightened properly(30 ft/lbs of torque). Now you get to test my theory. Please let me know what you find out and good luck.

You can CAREFULLY get a mechanics stethoscope or use a long screwdriver or the long antenna off your vehicle and push one end hard on the engine flywheel cover and then hold your ear up the antenna. I believe you will find the sound loudest in this area as opposed to the tranny or v-drive (which might be one box on your model).

If it is from the bell housing/flywheel cover, 99% chance it is the flex plate or damper or whatever we call it on a boat.

That's probably the problem but you should try to narrow it down with the primitive scope. Just don't get the scope caught in any moving parts.

Probably the dampner plate which sits between the engine and transmission. It spins with the engine and has springs which sometimes rattle just above idle speed in gear. Not sure if it is a problem or just an irritating noise. Warranty covered replacement for some who complained I believe. The transmission must be removed in order to replace the plate. Ask your dealer.

The conditions under which you hear the noise (in gear, low rpms, disappears as you move to higher rpms) matches a damper plate noise. But the noise itself sounds completely different than when my damper plate went bad. Mine was much more of a rattle/clanging sound...which was likely the springs rattling around in the plate. Yours seems to be much lower pitch. I'd do what AirTool suggested and see if you can track it to bellhousing v. transmission or v-drive.

I hope for your sake its just the prop like mine was. The noise sounded like marbles rattling in a can. A bad damper plate at 75 hours would be horrible. My problem went away with the prop switch.....dont know if taking it off and seating the new one helped but no damper plate here. Again good luck!!

Thanks y'all. I'll try to listen in other areas. But I think I'll go ahead and use this as an excuse to get the new prop too (1235 or 1617, hmmm). I'm also going to try and hit a dealer sometime soon and show them the video, but it's a bit outta the way. If it's a damper plate, any idea what that would cost to repair?

Aren't you still under warranty? or did you buy used and not transfer the PCM warranty?

damper plate or worn out dripless packing. Those were the culprits for my issue which had the same noise.

RE: cost...mine was replaced under warranty, but I believe the dealer told me PCM allowed +/-10 hrs labor under the assumption the engine will have to be pulled to get to the plate. It's a pretty big job. The plate itself is cheap.

I didn't transfer the warranty. I didn't know the process and by the time I figured it out the window closed. At this rate I've decided not more Nautiques for me.

You might check the site or call pcm. IIRC, there might have been a bulletin. Maybe bulletin's are covered w/o the warranty transferred. maybe...maybe not.

I have the same noise. 2008 220 SANTE. bought the boat from a friend who bought it from Sammy Roberts of Nautique in our area. My buddy said it has always been there since day 1. My buddy got it from sammy with only 3 hrs on it. Runs great, no probs at all. Fluid levels are fine, and so i haven't worried about it, but since i have read this, it does have me thinking. I did the warranty transfer on boat, but i believe that PCM warranty is 3 yrs and i was out of the warranty period. I do remember my buddy saying that they did take the original prop off to send off for warranty, but then the Nautique dealer got shutdown, and so my buddy and me now am stuck with the "loaner" prop (1527), which i was planning on sending off during the off season to be reconditioned by delta for like 150$. Been real happy with the 1527. wonder if i tighten it to that 30lbs if that might help? Ill keep tracking the post.
