    Spark plugs

Why do the newer boats go through spark plugs so often? 09' 230....

My '07 226 had 100 hrs when I bought it. Never would go over 4300 rpm/ 34 mph. Replaced plugs, whole new machine! Is there a recommend interval to change these plugs?

I believe electronic ignitions make plugs fire twice as often. Fires on compression and exhaust stroke - wears plugs out quicker.

Only some electronic ignition systems fire on both exhaust and compression stroke. Look for a coil pack with half as many ignition coils as cylinders. A V8 would have four ignition coils, for example.

Response from PCM tech dept. in S.C. is that even on the new engines, plugs should not wear out/burn out that quick. They should get well over the number of hours on my boat. I have about 340 hrs and the electrodes are almost gone completely, with white to pinkish porcelain. I think mine somehow got the wrong plugs installed at the factory. White should indicate a lean mixture.
Nordicron, I have had occasional run-ability issues since new, but that were attributed to fuel pumps (replaced under warranty). Seeing these plugs and with the response from PCM makes me wonder..

PCM just says to inspect annually. In 25 years of owning PCM engines, I don't think I've ever replaced plugs. I always checked once or twice a year, gapped them, and never an issue.

Shag which engine in your boat? I haven't replaced the plugs in my ZR390 yet, but will inspect at the end of season/winterizing time. I replaced the plugs annually on my Python powered boat, it almost always needed them...

343 excal.... I could understand a python burning through plugs a 'bit' quicker, but still not after just a few hundred hours..... I still think the wrong plugs were used initially. I mean the electrodes are almost gone!

If teh electrodes are almost burnt then you were running lean, I suspect your plug problem is related to your fuel pump(low fuel pressure) issue and they were damaged a long time ago but never replaced.

So I was way off on my hours. (must have been thinking about my last boat, and I have not had much time in this one this summer = bad memory) I only hve 147 hours... So that makes this problem even more worrisome.

The iridium plugs are what is needed in your 343 exc. Mine are 7 years old and have 275 hours on them, 90 hours of that is from this year.

From what i have seen in our workshop, boats that have low hours eg. 06 boat with 145 hrs the plugs are pretty worn and need replacing, 2011 boat 675 hrs on the originals and didnt look too bad.
