Gas (petrol) leaking from the breather

Another question to add to the list

It seems every time I take my boat out (1980 barefoot) I am getting quite a lot of fuel leaking out of the back of the boat from what I think is the breather in the top left hand corner, could this be because I am just over filling the tank or what? The fuel gauge only normally reads 3/4 full once I have filled up anyway.

Also the gas that has leaked out is staining the gel coat, I have tried polishing it out with auto polish but that won’t budge it, any suggestions to get the stain out?

I will try and get a pic tonight to give a better idea of what i am talking about

    Cheers

Sounds like you are correct. Gas is flowing out of the breather tube
in your filling tube. I've only seen this happen when overfilling the
    tank.

If you are not inclined to fix the gas guage, then I would suggest
that you determine how many gallons and/or liters you burn per hour.
Keep track of your hours of usage between fills, and fill to that level.

Example, if you burn 6 gallons per hour, and you've run the boat for
2.4 hours, then don't but more than 14.4 gallons in when you refuel.

I use to have the same problem on my 88 mastercraft. I could usually here it start to get full but then if I wasn't quick enough it would start overflowing. I bought one of these http://www.overtons.com/modperl/over...item_num=26005 and it worked great. I don't think I am going to be able to use it on my 97 supers sport because the rub rail is too close to the vent and I won't be able to get the seal around it.
