Transmission drain plug stripped/rounded off corners

I was winterizing my boat yesterday and the last plug I had to take off was the plug at the bottom of the transmission. When I attempting to loosen, the brass plug corners rounded where you put the ½ in socket extension into. Has this happened to anyone and if so what did you do to extract the plug?

There should be enough threads to be able to get large pliers or equal to get it to turn. That's a tight space for a large tool though. I changed mine out to a standard type plug. Much easier to see and deal with.
