I just got done working on my swim platform. I had alot of black inside the grain. Just wandering what it might be. I sanded it out with a d/a sander with 220 grit paper. It turned out great. Just wandering if this is o.k. to do?

I use the Starbrite less expensive stuff in the white bottle. I sand with 150 twice with a coat of oil and let dry between sandings, then repeat the whole sequence with 220, 400, and 1000 grit. Yes it is overkill but it looks great. Generally I just have to touch it up with a light sanding and oil during the season.Current

Cetol Marine West Marine part# 539106 Sikkens part# IVA300 QT............3rd year now and still looks as good as the first day I put it on. I sanded it all down first and then applied 4-5 coats (coats put on fast covering the whole top and sides). Check my pics in my album. I can send close-up big pics if anyone wants them.

Wakefun,
Your platform looks amazing. Are you saying you have only applied once in the past 3 years and it still looks that good?? I looked up the part at westmarine. It looks more like a stain than normal teak oil....does it make the platform more slippery then usual??
I may give this a try. We typically do the sanding/teak oil application at the beginning of every year but after a few months it looks dried out agian and reapplication of teak oil in necessary. Its a big hassle.
Thanks

I did it the year I bought my boat, which was the summer of 2003. I have not ever touched it since then. It is somewhat of a stain. It makes it a little bit slippery. It's not as slick let's say......if you put clear hard varnish on it. It's not like a thick, slick barrier. It's a little hard to explain. It works awesome and I never have to touch my teak, ever. If you want bigger pictures let me know or if you want current pictures, let me know and I will take some tonight. You could buy it and do a test spot on the bottom if you like. I left my bottom alone since you can't see it, even while on the trailer. If you decide to do it after you sanded your entire platform, put a whole bunch on and spread it around fast. Just cover the entire top and sides and then brush it around all the same direction. All at once with long brush strokes. Once you have one coat, wait 24 hours and do it again. I would do at least 3-4 coats.
You wouldn't happen to live in CA would you?

I have recently sanded and oiled my platform again I usually try to do it every 4 or 5 months to keep it looking great .I use a mix of 30 parts linseed oil and 70 parts turps with to coat `s it look like new again. The Sun in Austrailia is pretty harsh so maintenence is a big issue if you want you boat to look its best every time it hits the water.
