If you want some added peace of mind. Here's a test I've done in the past to test thermostats.
-Put the suspected bad thermostat in a pot off water on the stove
-Put a meat thermometer in the water with the thermostat
-turn the burner on high
-watch the thermostat as the temperature on the meat thermometer approaches 160 degrees.
-If it works properly it should noticably open up around 160 degrees. If not it will stay closed and the temp with continue to rise.Last edited by Mamigacz; 03-13-2013, 06:43 AM.

glad you figured it out. my experience is most mechanics are incompetent. be it, on a vehicle or boat, it doesn't really matter. with the help of on-line resources, almost anything can be done at home and not many will pay attention to detail like the you. my hobbies which include jeeps, dirt bikes and boats have required me to become a part-time mechanic. i'd rather not pay for someone to do things i'm just as capable if not more so after 15 mins of research.
