Engine Cover Removal - Is it Possible to Ease the PITA

I removed the entire engine cover from my SN 200 this weekend and the bottom half the clam shell is so tight at the base that some wriggling and force is required to get it around the engine (EX 343). The forward lift handles (my guess as to what they are... I assume they were used for putting in the engine) on either side of the cat converters stick out too far. Does anyone know if those were supposed to be removed after the engine was mounted or have any tricks to simplifying the removal of the engine cover? There is a picture of the "handles" here: http://www.pcmengines.com/ex-343/

they probably just leave them on to save the time of pulling them off. I pulled mine when I changed my EX330 non-cat exhaust manifolds to aluminum high flow manifolds. If they are in the way pull them off.
