    Oil Change Tip

    I keep my boat on a boat lift cradle. For year I would raise the boat and slide a 2" x 12" board under the boat to hold a drip pan. I ran the oil pan drain hose thru the drain plug and had to make sure the pan was stable on the board.

    My Topsider oil pump is good for changing the tranny fluid but not so good for sucking oil thru the dipstick.

    I bought a brass fitting with a female threads on one end that matches the male threads on the pan drain hose. The other side of the fitting is a barbed connection that fits the 1/2" od dia vinyl hose on the Topsider pump. I cut a foot off the excess of the Topsider 1/2" hose and slid it on the barbed connection.

    Now I just screw the 1 ft hose and fitting on the oil pan hose and pump the oil out while sitting in the boat.

    This is what I do. 1997 Ski Nautique, GT-40 engine.
    I take the oil pump with me to the boat ramp when it is time for an oil change.
    After running the boat, preferably using it so the oil is really warm, and the boat is back on the trailer, before pulling the boat out of the water, I suck about 3 to four quarts of oil out of the engine, from the topside.
    Take the boat home, park it on the trailer in the carport, thread the hose down through the hull drain, and put the open end of the hose in a container. Then I wait a day, for it to drain completely.
    The next day, I have about a half of a quart more oil in the container.
    I put about a half quart of new oil in the oil filter, maybe more, take the new filter out to the boat
    When I take the oil filter off, very little oil runs into the bilge. then I put the new filter on the engine, putt the drain hose back up, cap it, and secure it. Then I put the new oil in the engine.
    FYI, Ford GT-40 engine. Valvoline VR-1 racing oil, Motorcraft FL1-A oil filter.

      Thanks Jay...several of us have built similar adapters. Here is the best one....it has a nut that spins. Much easier to attach when its already on the barbed hose. You can get a hex plug to match so it doesn't drip when not connected.

        We use a jabsco (electric) pump set up that screws onto the lower hose to pump the oil from the bottom of the pan. In my experience the dip stick style pumps were never worth a darn.

          yep, have the fitting on my "Suck-Up" and it works perfectly. I did the lake boat a couple months ago and the guys could not believe how easy and fast the oil change went. They timed me, it from lifting the doghouse to being complete it took 11 minutes total.
