Engine Rebuild: How do I reset hours gauge?

    Hello,
I have a 1999 Ski Nautique. 5.8 PCM Pro Boss Engine, fuel injected. A machine shop is rebuilding the engine. Hours meter read on a LCD display on the Tachometer. I would like the engine hours to start over at zero after the rebuild.

Some posts on the forum suggest that replacing the tachometer will accomplish a zero hours reading.

Other posts suggest that the hours are stored in the ECM and will still show up on a new tachometer.

Can anyone clarify how I go about accomplishing this?

    Thanks,
    Dave

The Ford GT-40 does not store hours. Is that the engine you have?
I believe you need to replace the tachometer.

I have a new engine GT40 (long block, starter, alternator, pump)

You can reset the digital teleflex tachometer?

How would you keep track of total hours on the boat? If a car/truck gets a new engine you don’t reset the odometer. Instead the replacement is reflected in the maintenance records. That being said those LCD gauges are know to be problematic, so worth replacing. Just leave the new hour meter hooked up to a power source for correct time so it matches the hour meter your taking out.

Yep, on my old boat which did not come with an hour meter I added an hour meter but wanted to set it to what dealer told me was on the engine. So I just hooked up to a little 12v battery out of a garage opener until it said what it should then installed in boat. That one ran off of ignition in on position not really engine hours though. I am unsure on one in nautique what it really runs off of.
