Saw this link from Wakeboarder.com and I thought I'd jump in. I've got a Dixie skier (someday I'll have a Nautique), but it's the same engine- it's even turns the wrong way like you guys!
I had the exact same problem. Did all the stuff everybody else did. I even got giant welding cable for the + wire, it's like an inch thick. Still had the problem.
Had the starter checked out at the auto place, they said it was good. One day I had an old timer who had never even seen an inboard boat engine cehck it out. He immediatly said "it's the starter". I took it to get rebuilt ($90) and the bushing were bad in it. It still worked but it requred tons of amps to get it to turn.
Before I got it fixed it would crank but only on a fully charged battery If it didn't fire up after a few times the cables got so hot they smoked and the plastic melted. Jumping it was out of the question too. I used to carry two fully charged batteies w/me all the time and wouldh't shut it off the whole time out.
So, two years later after the rebuild it's worked like clock work. Whatever you do don't buy a starter from from an autparts store, evidently the guy that owned the boat got one from there and it turned the wrong way sucking water into the engine and it had to be rebuilt. That's the story he told me at least.
Hope this helps.
