Saw this link from Wakeboarder.com and I thought I'd jump in. I've got a Dixie skier (someday I'll have a Nautique), but it's the same engine- it's even turns the wrong way like you guys!

I had the exact same problem. Did all the stuff everybody else did. I even got giant welding cable for the + wire, it's like an inch thick. Still had the problem.

Had the starter checked out at the auto place, they said it was good. One day I had an old timer who had never even seen an inboard boat engine cehck it out. He immediatly said "it's the starter". I took it to get rebuilt ($90) and the bushing were bad in it. It still worked but it requred tons of amps to get it to turn.

Before I got it fixed it would crank but only on a fully charged battery If it didn't fire up after a few times the cables got so hot they smoked and the plastic melted. Jumping it was out of the question too. I used to carry two fully charged batteies w/me all the time and wouldh't shut it off the whole time out.

So, two years later after the rebuild it's worked like clock work. Whatever you do don't buy a starter from from an autparts store, evidently the guy that owned the boat got one from there and it turned the wrong way sucking water into the engine and it had to be rebuilt. That's the story he told me at least.

    Hope this helps.

Another thing maybe is the nuetral safety switch on the tranny has gone bad. Off the top of my head it goes to the starter solenoid? Mine was bad ( I had lots of bugs to work out!), so I just bypassed it.

The relay lets the big current flow from battery to starter by turning on when you turn your key. It's a big switch activated by a small switch.

Do you know if you get any clicking from the relay when this is the case?

You don't get any clicking by the starter relay. The neutral safety switch is in series with the starter switch.

01 Super Air Nautique same symtom

My 01 SAN some times have same problem, when press start button, click sound can heard , starter don't turn, some times after a short click heard followes by dead dash, try again it can start,(may need few times to try)once started, every think become ok,can play one day no problem, first I think a weakened battery or bad contact battery connector,
I clean it,same, than I change new battery, seems bettery, but the same symtom had happen again, think the problem not yet shoot, later I read meny advice in this forum, think about the starter relay to be changed, after read the texts this time, feel may be the relay not the target, I have to chek more to the starter, till now the boat can use every suny sunday. HOp can solve the "some times problem)

Check your ground connection on the starboard side (drivers side of the boat) behind the impellar pump for looseness in the crimp, pull on the wire to seee if the wire pulls out or moves in the connection.

Richard my advice was for the original poster, But let me try some diffferent advice for you, check you connections on the switching box under the dash on the kick board. Check your red and black wires on the box they should be 10 gauge wires, make sure the crimps ar tight and clean. Then check your battery terminal connectins again but check where the wires go into the battery terminal end, checking for corrosion on the wires and terminal.

RE: 01 Super Air Nautique same symtom

It was a loose ignition wire behind the key switch. It was rigged by prior owner. The red ignition wire running to the key switch was twisted together and taped with electrical tape. So all that was because of a bad connection behind the key switch. It had power at the key switch when I first tested it so it must have been just barely working and when I messed with the wires it came off completely. My relay works oka and battery is ok. I also found that the relay could be jumped but I wasn't smacking the screwdriver on it hard enough.

I’m assuming no one will be looking at this 18 year old thread, but I’m having the same issue and cannot find the problem. Any info on what happened would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
