starter solenoid super sport (/air) gt 40 removal

Can anyone give tips on removing this? I know where it is, but not sure what all i have to remove to get to it. I am guessing rear seat, but any tips would help.

Are you talking about the starter solenoid, the smaller cylindrical part mounted on the starter, or the heavy duty relay mounted on the back side of the plate on the flywheel end of the engine that has the engine's computer, and other wiring on it?

The starter on a GT-40 works exactly like a GM starter. The big red battery cable on the starter solenoid is always hot. The "crank" signal or voltage from the key switch, or control box with pushbutton dashboards applies power to a yellow wire, with a red stripe, that also goes to the neutral switch on the transmission before it gets to the starter.

I was under the impression that there is an external starter solenoid (relay) like most Ford motors. This, on my boat, is mounted in a PITA location.

Like most 70-80 ford V8s when you hear a CLICK the issue tends to be from these (and Warn Winches), these are the main reason you hear the CLICK. Back when I was testing the issue I recall placing a VOLT meter on the HOT wire at the starter and not having the VOLTS jump when I hit start when there was a CLICK at the Relay.

This is the part that I was guessing is bad…

I will have to go back and check... i was thinking that the issue was with the Heavy relay... but i could be the starter. after looking at "http://www.nautiqueparts.com/solenoidstarterrelay.aspx" i might need a new starter. but i will have to recheck the Yellow wire coming from the relay.

The Root Issue is, from time to time, i will press start and i just hear a CLICK. I was thinking that it was the relay not letting the starter to get the power like orlder Ford V8s.

But I am thinking i need to go back and check Yellow wire. Or just pull the starter and take it in for testting.

I believe you have identified the correct part in the link you posted - solenoid, starter relay. When that goes bad, you will hear a single CLICK as you described. Unbolt the panel from the engine and you can get to the part easier. Be sure to disconnect the battery and note or take a picture of the connections to get the correct wires on the right posts.

Here is a diagram of the fuel pump wiring.

I know the heavy duty relay we are talking about looks like the relay used on older Fords in their starter circuit wiring, but DO NOT wire it like that!

The diagram above shows a wire coming from the battery (#1) in the diagram, to the starter (#3) and then to the relay (#4).
The heavy red battery cable actually goes directly to the relay, and ON THE SAME POST ON THE RELAY is a second heavy red wire going to the starter. The red cable going to the starter is always hot.

If the board you are referring to is the one on the rear of the engine - yes. The relay/solenoid is on the underside of it.
