    Starting problem, 2011 210 Coastal

    Hi

I recently bought a 2011 210 Coastal Edition. The boat had 40 hrs on it on delivery and I have put another 60 on it since then. The boat is Coastal Ed but not team so it has no LINC and it has a key start not number pad. I noticed on a couple of occasions when starting the boat that i would get a small click from the ignition and no start. On those occasions I took the key out and flipped it around and it worked fine. It happened again recently and I had a local auto guy come and have a look, battery, cables and everything were fine. He got the boat to start from the starter relay and then the key randomly started working again for a couple of days. This morning I went out to the boat and again just a small click from behind the key. Shortes it at the starter and it turned over just fine.

Anyone have any ideas on this one? Its the 409 Crusader engine. I checked all the fuses I could find.

    Thanks

So you are hearing the click behind the key at the dash? My first thought was a starter solenoid but if that was the case I think you would be hearing the click back by the motor not behind the dash. Sounds like maybe some faulty or corded wiring behind the dash that is sending an inconsistent signal to the starter. I would take a look at the dash wiring coming from the key to see if anything looks loose or corroded. Corrosion on the battery cables or posts could be a cuplrit but it sounds like those already checked out. A click usually means that the starter is not getting enough power to turn over so you will need to hunt down where the short is. Good luck and sorry if my diagnosis is way off.

Hopefully a simple matter, but is your dealer nearby to assist (on a warranty basis)?

Sounds like the ignition switch itself, pull it and check that you have complete contact in the start position. Easy fix, and not much $, or £!

          Thanks for the quick responses.

Unfortunately since I bought the boat in the US and then took it overseas Nautique won't honor the warranty...

Yesterday I had another electrician come and check all the wiring. The key turn was fine, the neutral switch was fine but when the wiring got to the big black and yellow plug on the ECU it wasn't going any further. He said it should switch to a negative there and that then starts it. We pulled the plug out sprayed a little WD40 in there and reconnected it and it worked fine and has done since then. Im a little concerned that it is going to happen again now. Is there a fix here? My electrical know how is very bad, not sure what to do really.
