GT-40, impeller seized, smoking... now what

So, I did the one thing I've never done before. I let a friend launch the boat and warm it up while I parked the truck. Got back in the boat, let him drive it... then I noticed some smoke... actually quite a bit of smoke, coming from the exhaust and from under the clamshell. Shut down instantly. Swam the boat back to the ramp.... yeah, over 2 miles. That's why I do ironmans..
Pulled the RWP, pulled out the impeller and checked it... yeah it was toast. Installed a new one, cleaned out the strainer, and checked the intake grate... sure as sh88 I picked up a trash bag.

So, got it all put back together, removed the bag... started her back up in the water. Back to 160. Ran great.

What should I be worried about now?

Did the samething in my 98. My main concern was the exhaust tubes. Make sure they are not leaking from the heat stress. Sounds like you caught it in time. Might want to also check the trans cooler. just need to look down line after the pump to make sure there are no rubber pieces clogging the cooler.

Can you expand more on the heat stress? I did this at the end of last year and it appeared that I had a small amount of leakage from the exhaust tubes. Can I still run it this way? Will that create long term problems? I thought it might just be coming from the clamp on seals but there might be more to the problem. the engine runs great other than this very minor leakage. Thanks. -Marc

I'd give the exhaust a once over look then run it and look for water leaks and listen/smell for exhaust leaks. If none are obvious, use it for the day and watch closely for any water build up in the bilge.

I think I may have just had the same problem today. I have a 98 gt40 and the Temp got up to about 210 -220 ish. My friend saw it Smoking out the back so I shut it shut it down immediately h.... Kept hearing a funky noise Coming from around the muffler area. Swam the boat back to the dock, let it cool down Completely, Checked the water strainer and saw it very very dirty but nothing too alarming. I tried starting it up just to see , which it did start no problem but I shut it down right away. Gonna check the Impeller first thing tomorrow. If it over heated a lot would that cause that “heat stress” to ruin the muffler ? I’m gonna change the oil as well.....any other suggestions aside from changing the impeller if it’s ruined. Thanks in advance for the info everyone.

Most likely you don't need to worry about anything. Get it back in the water and start the engine. If it's cooling just fine at idle and there's no water leaking anywhere, run it up on plane. If the temp stays steady then you're fine. Don't over-think this.

Agreed. I smoked an impeller once but caught it before getting too hot. The impellor was toast but I didn't find any pieces elsewhere in the system. Popped a new one in and it's been fine ever since.

Agree with the above. Don't check, replace your impeller, check your oil for water (no need to change if it doesn't need it but if it makes you feel better it can never hurt), check your hoses for soft spots and do a general nut and bolt inspection to make sure nothing is loose then water test it. Never good to get hot but it doesn't sound like you let it go too far. You should be fine.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions..just changed out the impeller. It was shredded. Wowza. Unfortunately I think the exhaust tubes on both sides got damaged. They seem to be leaking a bit. Must be tiny cracks because they aren’t really visible unless you turn on the motor and then they start to leak. I guess while I’m at it I should also order a new exhaust. Sucks tho that it’s $600. Ouch. Tubes are 90 each. At least it seems like I didn’t damage a piston or something worse.

I went out and revved it a bit more but noticed the temperature getting to 200 so I turned back to the dock.... any suggestions. I’m thinking maybe some pieces of the impeller are causing trouble.. Need to see how to flush the lines but no idea how to do that.

Check the thermostat housing and the transmission cooler for impeller pieces blocking the flow.

Happy to report that I did everything you guys suggested and I found the problem. Yes a bunch of pieces of the impeller were stuck at the hose coming right out of the water pump. Also a couple pieces up in where the thermostat is. Now I'm just going to order a new thermostat since the gasket is starting to leak and the new exhaust tubs also. But I put it all back together took it for a spin and the temperature held steady at 160. Thanks again to everyone who chimed in.

Does anyone know how I can find the Sherwood Impeller part # for my 2002 SANTE 210 with GT-40? I think it's 09959k...
