what to clean flame arrester with?

call me dumb, but what exactly do i use to clean my flame arrestor?

Some one else may chime in, but I used to take it off, spray carb cleaner from the inside out, then let it dry good before putting it back on.

I had never rinsed mine after... But it can't hurt. If I did, I would probably blow it dry with some compressed air... Since it is metal, there shouldn't be a worry to damage anything with the compressed air.
My disclaimer: I am not a mechanic....

But it has worked fine for me for years and years doing it that way.

I think i just used mineral spirits and shook it out hard.

let it soak in some mineral spirits or varsol and blow it out to get everything out of the fins

That's right. If its real gummy, the gum is going to need some kind of force to get it off.

I like the idea of soaking overnight or so and then use a fresh can of carb cleaner to blow through the fins. Then let it dry in the sun if you like.
I wouldn't use any water.

I used some brake cleaner and it did the trick (with the flame arrestor off the engine of course) :-)
