    Another battery problem

We mortgaged the ranch and bought a 2000 Super Air this winter. Since the boat is still new to me, I'm nervous enough that before we leave home and head up to the lake, I give the start button a quick push to make sure the engine turns over. Both times the battery was dead. The first trip was about 3 weeks after we demo'd the boat and the second trip was about 3 weeks after the first one. Both times, I charged the boat off the truck for 20 minutes and it turned right over at home and started right up when we made it into the lake a couple of hours later. The boat ran great all day both times and we had a blast. It's been a week since trip #2, I just checked the battery again and it is down to 7 volts.

I read the threads regarding batteries that won't hold a charge and started to track down whatever load might be on that shouldn't be. However, I pulled the + lead off the battery and only measure 2 milliamps with my Fluke meter. I know several people have said they keep a charger on all the time but it seems like 2 mA shouldn't be enough to draw down a marine battery after only a week. The battery was new (according to the dots on the label) in March of 2002 so it doesn't seem like it should need replacing.

I'm going to charge the battery and have it checked but I'd appreciate any suggestions.

    Thanks - Gene

You should check with your dealer about having a battery cut off switch installed. I would imagine that power is being drawn while the boat is off.

Thanks for the quick response. With the + lead off the battery and my Fluke meter between the + lead and the + terminal on the battery, I'm measuring the current being drawn with the boat "off". It is only 2 milliamps which is barely anything at all. If I understand the way these things work, even if I let it sit for 1000 hours at 2 mA that would only take 2 Amp-hours off what should be an 80 amp-hour battery and the battery voltage shouldn't drop to 7 volts until I've pulled much more than that off it.

I would venture to guess that your battery isn't holding a charge. If it's the original battery then a replacement would be cheap insurance.
