Cracked block

Hey Guys,
What does it take to do when block was cracked. Its 2005 excalibur 330. I need to consider new engine vs replacement parts. How much replacing block would cost and where I would go from here. Thank you.

you're looking at about 5-6k either way you slice it. personally i'd buy a remanufactured engine from jasper.

you are in the 7-10k range out the door to have a dealer do it and do quality work.... at least in this area and Dallas. Depends on the engine, boat model etc.

Hard to give a price until it is out of the boat and torn down, could be major or could be a cracked exhaust. A RR SBF short marine block is less than 2K, a SBC should be even cheaper. Most of the cost is labor so anything you can do will you save some money.

Thats assuming he's paying someone else to take care of the problem entirely.

If he's willing to pull the engine, break it down, install all of the parts and accessories onto the new longblock, and put it into the boat himself, I'd say he's looking at closer to $2500, including misc parts for the install.

Supplemental freeze coverage exists, but is just that, supplemental. It's pretty cheap too, something like $20 or $30 for the winter. Good to add if you live where winterization isn't optional.

Hope you're hungry for some crow. I just got it on my new policy with Geico. Added $25 to the annual premium. When looking at quotes from others it was typically much more - more like $100-150/yr but I'll take it!

hey i left that small percentage open. i have geico. i think i might try to add that to my policy. we only had about 7-12 below freezing nights this year, and none were hard freezes, but peace of mind is nice. i do take precautions, but even still. is your policy underwritten by sea worthy, a berkshire/hathaway co?

yes, it's sea worthy. I was surprised how cheap it is given a replacement for my motor would probably be $25K. Had a scare this year after I had some warranty work done and the motor was de-winterized. I put heater in but about a month later I had boat detailed and detailer forgot to plug heater back in. I'm not there and didn't figure it out for about a week and a half. Spent a lot of time looking up historical temps on internet and it did get into mid 20's once or twice but not for many hours each night and it turned out I had no problems. After that, when I got my new boat I signed up for the $25/year premium! Great peace of mind insurance.

Thank you guys for replies. I didn't start it yet but I just wanted to know in advance. I got scared because I saw one of the freeze plugs poped out from the block. It may turned out that its just a plug. Did anyone had this and the engine was still ok.

The freeze plug may have saved you. I hope that is the case. My brother is a boat mechanic and he has definitely seen cases where freeze plugs popped out but the block was spared. I hope that is the case for you.

I had the freeze plugs save my LT1 in our old Prostar. Apparently I just didn't get all the water out when winterizing. Replaced the plugs and good to go...whew!
