Gas odor with storage cover on

I just removed my cover after a short trip to the ramp yesterday and noticed a strong gasoline odor. I did not want to remove the cover at the storage facility since it had a massive amount of pollen sitting on it and was hoping the short stint down the road to the ramp would help blow the pollen off. I could not pinpoint the where it was coming from and it went away once the cover was removed. Upon arriving back at the storage facility to dry the boat off (rain storm and Pollen dust cloud don't ask) I was able to pinpoint the cause of the odor. Apparently the cover goes over the gas tank vent and allows odors to build up under the cover as you can imagine. I am getting ready to have my cover worked on as the velcro strips on the tower slots have rotted away and want to find out if it might help to have the section of the cover that covers the tank vent on the port side modified/ cut out to allow the tank vent to ventilate unobstructed. has anyone noticed this or does your cover obstruct the tank vent on your boat. I have a 2008 210 SANTE. Thanks.

I have never noticed this issue before with any of my boats. Was the gas tank very full? There is a chance that some gas splashed out of the vent and got on the cover causing the strong smell? If you are having the cover worked on then maybe you could add some kind of vent like this to go over the fuel vent.

I notice some on mine but only when stored for a few days. I agree with s kelly, it has to come from the vent. I store mine with the cover on but keep a fan in it on a timer, which may help to remove some of the smell.

I am inclined to think that the tank was fairly full and it might have vented out during my short trip to the ramp. I am getting ready to take the cover in for repair once the pollen season has ended which is hopefully within the next week.

I used to have the same issue with my '95 through the winter. I kept it in the garage so I would simply open the cover for a few days and the smell was gone. One year I left the vent uncovered, no smell, but the winter dust build up on the transom was more work than uncovering and airing it out.
