G23 starter issue

hey, was curious if i'm doing something wrong. when i press start on my G23 about every 3rd or 4th time, it won't start but, makes a really annoying sound as if it's not engaging. it's a similar sound you hear when when you try to start your car motor and the engine is already running (oops, yes have done that too). anyway, i mentioned to my dealer and he said to press the start once and get off it and not to hold it down. but, i noticed it still does it.

has anyone else had this problem? sorry, I can't even change the oil in my car so just curious if i'm doing something.

I would think the two most likely possibilities would be the flywheel has some damaged teeth or the starter drive is not engaging the flywheel properly (starter gear not extending far enough to the flywheel). Hopefully it's just the starter. The engine or at very least the transmission would have to come out to replace the flywheel. Pull the starter off and rotate the engine to look for damaged teeth or replace the starter and hope the problem goes away. I'm sure that's easier said than done. You should fix this asap. If the flywheel is not already damaged, it will be from the starter drive not engaging properly. Is the boat under warranty?

thanks BT! i appreciate it. yes, it is under warranty. i've only had the boat a few weeks. at first it did it once every 5 or 6 starts. now it's about every two or three times.

We have had same problem but we noticed that when you press Stop once there is still a blue light on keypad. We then press Stop a second time - blue light goes off. Since we have pressed Stop X 2 times we have not had starter problems again.

thanks rsa-nautique. when i press stop twice my stereo goes off. it only continues to play if both blue lights are on. not sure if others have this issue. but, on my past nautiques, the stereo would play if only one blue light was on.

My Stereo works with only one blue light so you might have a bug there. I'm pretty sure when both lights are on that means the engine is primed and ready to start and one means the electronics are just on.

Checked this weekend - press stop twice - my stereo still plays.

are you saying your stereo plays only when both blue lights are on ??? if so something is hook up wrong, also you might notice, that the bilge pump soft key light is still on when you hit the stop key twice , you do not have to go to the battery switch to cut everything off in the g23, hit the bilge pump soft key ,light will go out and your boat is in the state like older boats did, that had a toggle switch under the throttle to cut off all battery power. sorry this has nothing to do with north westwater starter problem unless the computer is mix up and thinks the engine is already running when you try to start. I would think any good mechanic that listens, would know whats happening when he hears that noise . my2 cents.
