Drain Plug for water pump won't go in, remove water pump cover?

Over the years this plug has become the single plug that takes an hour+ to try and get back in. I believe the threads have been so gubbered up that it won't go in. This is the plug that goes in the circulating pump on a 2004 superair 210. I tried to use a tap to clean the threads out but it will not fit well enough to use it. The belt and counter weight (I think) gets in the way, even when I remove the belt. My question is, is there anything special I need to know if I remove that water pump (I know we use an impeller, but I believe this is still called the water pump housing). There is a red cover held on by four allen bolts, then a few hex bolts that hold it to the engine, but do I need to take caution about moving or getting thins out of alignment? Is there a different method I could use?

Do what you have to do to get a tap started straight. Just like replacing the water pump on a Chevy 350.

Just curious if anyone has any resource article or something? Do you have to remove the balancer in order to remove the water circulating pump cover? Has anyone had these issues before - it seems like it would be a common issue with the angle of this plug. Thanks for your help in advance.

I was able to tap it (more like clean out the threads) and get the plug in, hopefully no leaks. Thanks for the quick replies. I think when I winterize next year I will just pull that hose off and leave the plug intact.
