    Random Engine shut-off

Ok so today I was pulling a wakeboarder (5th set of the day) and everything was going great until the engine shut off for apparently no reason. It was almost like the kill-switch had been pulled. We checked the kill-switch and unfortunately that was not the problem. When we tried to restart the motor everything sounded right and the vitals were all good but it wouldn't turn over. It sounded like it was either A) not getting gas, or B) the sparkplugs weren't firing. The fuel pump DOES work. Any ideas as to what the problem may be?

P.S. Do you guys know of an aftermarket 'scanner' tool that I can use to turn the check engine light off by myself. When I fix this I don't really want to drive around with my check engine light on.

Ok, after some research I'm leaning towards needing to replace the fuel filters. Anyone agree with this?

When I had fuel filter issue it wasn't as if someone pulled the kill. The motor actually lost power and if I pulled the throttle back it would cough a bit but maybe not die. Also seemed to do it more under load such as when pulling a boarder and making a turn. I could then go for a while before it did it again but gradually got worse. How are your filters? Might be worth a change anyway.

Okay...I'm confused. Is your check engine light/MIL or see dealer light on? I don't think the light comes on for a clogged fuel filter.

I'd also like to better understand "wouldn't turn over". A clogged fuel filter will not prevent your starter from working.

        I feel like we're married.

Going down the river 21.5 miles /hr . pulling a board The engine just stops. All the gauges are fine excpt the check engine light was on( the little red light about the size of a dime on the dash) the boat just stopped didn't burp ,spit ,hiccupped or anything just stopped. Tried to start it the engine would turn over but would not start (plenty of power from battery and starter but would not start) Thanks

Doesn't the red check engine light come on whenever the key is on and the engine isn't running?

By the way, it is not obvious to me what boat this is.

The red light stays on when? ...when the engine is running? But you said the engine won't run. Was the red light staying on (while the engine was running) before you had the "shut down."

By the way, ....if the kill switch is bad or lanyard is pulled, the gauges and PP will be dead but the keypad will be on and the engine will crank all day long.

(I assume you have keypad not LINK.)

Yes the red light has been on for a while before the shut-down. All gauges were fine Oil pressure, engine temp, etc. Don't think it's the lanyard or kill switch because the gauges still turn on.

That's not good. Let me think about it now I mostly understand what is going on.

I believe I have it figured it out. I will let you know for sure tomorrow when I get a chance to buy the part. After reading some other threads and some trial and error I'm 90% sure it's the ignition relay.

Let us know...and that probably won't fix your "check engine light" if it was on before...while the engine was running.

Well, unfortunately that was not the problem. On another note, can my local mechanic turn off the check engine light or do I have to make the 2 1/2 hour trip to the nearest PCM dealer?

That's always been a mystery. Some codes clear themselves when repaired. Your local mechanic probably doesn't have the tool unless he does marine work or uses marine engines in hot rods.

PS - you should follow mrshelly's thread on sputtering to death. He has no fuel in the FCC bowl.
