Batteries not charging.....is this the culprit?

So it looks like my batteries are being zapped even when out driving, so after being rescued the other night by a friend I asked a local mechanic to look at it, but he's not looked at it yet and I looked at it today and wondered if there not being a belt on the alternator could be the answer????

Its a 2001 SAN with a GT-40 engine with only 240 hrs on it.

thoughts and also if there's a belt to go on it, what size or part is it and where does it go, the pulley also in the picture or lower down on the engine!! Any pics appreciated!!!

Isnt the old belt in the bilge ? If you can find the old belt it will have a number on it . If the belt is gone check with a auto parts store or PCM dealer they should be able to look it up.

Belt, aye; but see also the corrosion on the pulleys? The belt will wear out prematurely with that corrosion. Unless you want this to be an unplanned and random re-occurrence, you could have the pulleys removed, blasted and recoated. . .

Cheers for the replies fellas, we found the belt under the sump, fairly well shredded, reckon the rust is a problem and could have caused it, so have ordered the belt kit that comes from uk dealer and has both water pump and alt belt together and have got a spare now also so will maybe get these parts off when it comes out the water end of season if it doesn't do it prematurely with the new belt. The dealer who is supplying the parts said he reckons it will be due to rust so says a decent rub down should be ok for now.

Now, next question is what kind of battery terminals do you run, the normal over the car style bits or screwed onto the leisure bit of the battery as I am going to replace these as one broke today, clearly just age.

Any suggestions to parts or design?

              Cheers
              Paul

Maybe have your mechanic check to make sure that nothing is seized ( an idler or pully), and that the belt wasn't burnt off because of this. It only takes a couple of seconds and gives a guy a little piece of mind.

That little bit of surface rust isn't going to hurt anything. Replace the belt check alignment and tension. Then go have some fun!!!
