Too Much Oil?

So I took my boat ('03 AN 216) in for annual service before our week long trip to change trans, engine oil and impeller. So before we launch I check the dip stick while on the trailer (fairly level) and by estimating from the quart low mark I would say it looked like a quart over. So I thought hmmmmm that can't be right. I run for the 1st day and notice I have a little oil in the bilge and on top of the oil filter and its still reading high floating on the water. Oil pressure never got above 46-48 psi or so which is normal for the Excalibur 330. So I call the shop and the service manager tells 1) they suck the oil out and always put 5 quarts back in and that dip sticks on marine motors never read right and 2) back off the filter and make sure an old o-ring isn't stuck on there. I've heard that about marine motors before so I didn't really question it although it still doesn't sit well. So I try to back off the filter and F@$* that sucker is ON THERE. Long story short I had a couple awesome guys with a filter wrench and new filter help me out. It was probably close to 2 full turns too tight. Doesn't anyone else have their dip stick not read even close to accurate? When I bought it last year it was serviced by another dealer (Nautique) and oil was always spot on.

i'd stop using that dealer. any moron knows that you put in what you take out. you don't just fill it to brand new capacity. i typically put in 3 qts, wait a while, add a half qt. and run the boat. then let the oil drain down to the pan and adjust from there. i'd seriously call them and ask them how they could be so lazy and/or stupid.

I would find a new service dept. and drain a bit of oil out. I've always done my own service and always removed/replaced about 4-4.5 quarts on my 330. I use a vaccum canister and suck the warm oil out through the dipstick. I tend to get what I consider more accurate readings with the boat in the water. After all that is where the engine will be run the most, so I fill to the high dip stick mark with the boat in the water. I check all my fluids this way.

Ditto on putting in typically 4 quarts...

and I've noticed my filter has oil seeping/building up in the channels after about 20 hours...and I'm a perfectionist on its tightness.
I've just assumed that auto's do it some too and we just never notice because it is impossible to see. I usually just stick the corner of a paper towel in there and let the oil be soaked up by the towel.

I've had the same problem ever since I removed of the factory filter. Every filter I've used seeps just a bit and I have to keep a rag or something there to keep from making a mess.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah you could actually see the filter start seeping after about 20-30 seconds of the motor running. Just got off the phone with a large Nautique dealer a couple hours away and they said something definitely isn't right. A stock manufactured motor shouldn't be off by that much on the dip stick and their service should have measured how much oil came out to put it back in. Well do I take it back and say "fix it" or chalk it up to lesson learned and buy an extractor myself and do my own maintenance?

Buy an extractor and use a wix gold filter. Next go to lake knowing some 8 buck an hour kid didn't jack with your boat. I shouldn't say that my nautique dealer is bad ***! Just an hour away from me and I'm really weird about my stuff! It happens though. If you question a wix filter go ask anyone at a parts house of hour mechanic what they use in there cars and trucks. BTW they are black and look nice in the engine compartment.

What is considered over filled? I replace the oil in my 409. Put in 4 quarts and the oil level is just above the top mark on the dipstick. Should I drain some oil out?

Buy an extractor and use a wix gold filter.

I was looking at this one http://www.nautiqueparts.com/asuck-uppump.aspx but will check out the pela too. I would say a little over the hash marks is ok (mm or 2) but I am WAY over. I should post some pics later.

I would start over by fully draining and then refilling as having too much oil (like 1qt extra) is just as bad for the engine as not enough as it will cause the oil to foam and negatively reduce the amount of lubrication being provided.

You can see the oil pooling around the top of the filter (then drip down into the bildge and on the dip stick, it comes up past the "O" on "DO" not overfill

Of interest - if the dealer who did the change really just loosened the existing filter to make sure there aren't 2 o-rings instead of one, that means they didn't change it! So... 1 qt of dirty oil in the filter plus 5 new quarts of oil is 6! You over by a good 1 - 1.5 quarts!
