210 Excal 343 Tranmission Fluid Change 2 or 1.5 quarts

    Greetings,

I was checking all my fluid levels and noticed the Transmission was down slightly. I followed the procedure in the manual to get the motor up to temp and run the boat and then shift into gear, neutral, reserves and then measure from the dip stick. The manual is a little confusing on the process for the different transmissions listed. I checked on the name plate at it read " 1:1.050 ratio" on the tag. So my boat is a 2010 210, and I'm not sure if ti's the PCM Power Plus or just PCM. Any help would be appreciated. I have a fluid extractor and can get the transmission fluid as well, but what PCM recommends would be helpful, or if another fourm member has any insight.

    Thanks,

    Mike

I'm not sure as to your question...are you looking for the type of fluid? If so, DexMerc (Dexron III is no longer licensed). I have a 2008, but AFAIK, nothing changed in 2010 on the vdrive or tranny.

The manual is confusing because it refers to both the vdrive and the transmission as "transmission." They are separate units. The transmission is the PCM 1.23 and the vdrive is the power plus. The transmission has a dipstick and the vdrive has two inspection (oil fill/drain) plugs. The transmission requires fluid changes and the vdrive does not (it uses synthetic...you should check the levels and look for contamination, but changes are not regular maintenance).

Yes exactly what was confusing me, as it was referring to the vdrive and the transmission as "transmission" in the manual. I have not need to changed the transmission fluid however, that's what I was able to read/inspect on the dip stick, I guess I will refill to whatever comes out plus a lil bit. (my original question 1.5 or 2 quarts to add?)

This was visible from the rear bench seat after flipping up the motor hatch.

So 2 quarts of DexMerc are needed?

Sorry...I skipped past your question in the thread title and wasn't sure what you were asking in the body.

In any event, IIRC, 2qts is the capacity, but fill with what you remove (assuming you're at the correct level currently) and then check it when you're on the water. I measure what I remove and refill with the same amount. Most find they can't get two quarts out...usually 1-1.25 qts. To get closer to two, your suction hose has to be threaded precisely through a small space inside the tranny. Since I typically only get 1-1.25qts, I change it when I change the motor oil at 50hr intervals.

I'd also recommend you do not use a plastic hose to insert in the tranny...get some copper tubing instead. There are a number of folks who've accidentally gotten the plastic hose hung up in the tranny and can't get it out. Sometimes they pull on it and it breaks or otherwise leaves debris in the tranny...which requires removal and disassembly.

I got to it this weekend once the rain stopped. I drove the boat around for about an hour and then was able to suck out about 1.25 quarts. It was rather brownish and I was glad I was able to suck it out and replace with some fresh RED.

I filled to lower level and then ran for about 30 minutes and added 2 more pumps into it and it was right in between the lines for high and low. Pretty easy to do and good for another 50 hours this season.
