Changing Steering Cable on 210

The steering cable on my '09 210 broke last weekend. I had changed these before in my old 2001 and again in the '94 Sport Nautique but changing out this cable is tough. I think they installed that before anything else. To even reach the four bolt bracket that holds the cable I have to lay on top of the starboard ballast tank. The alternator is right in the way. I don't know how much it costs to replace it at the dealer but I would give up 500 for the whole deal.
Anyone have any luck with this repair before? Some advise would be appreciated (other than take it to the dealer).
