Gear box problems on a brand new excalibur 343

At the start of the season we had a brand new Excalibur 343 engine installed into one of our old boats, the previous one giving up the game mid summer last year. The engine was installed by pcm engineers but they used the old gear box.

After running the engine in we started towing for a number of weeks. One morning (towing a mono skier) the gear box overheated and the boat wouldn't go into gear. After towing the boat in we checked the oil to see that it was grey. We carry out boat checks every morning and it was pink some hours before. We immediately thought heat exchanger for the oil and replaced it, flushed the gearbox, and then when satisfied resumed towing.

However, the boat wouldn't engage into forwards gear, only at stupidly high revs would it engage. It seemed to clear itself up but then when towing a boarder it fell out of gear, with the revs hitting the limiter. (new gear box time)

After three hours in a boat yard we were able to remove and replace the gearbox with a refurbished one. However when testing the newer gearbox has the same problem, revving high before engaging gear (in forwards) and then falling out of gear when simply driving at 25 thou revs, and when turning. Managed to limp the boat back to the pontoon however it was trickling forwards but with engine was revving far too high.

Could this be a gear linkage problem or is it that these older gearbox's cant stand up to the new engine??

    Any help would be appreciated!
