2002 Sport nautique starter, Keypad,Electrical Issues

So here is the whole back story. I inherited a 2002 Sport Nautique from my Father who passed away im 28 by the way. Towards the Middle of last summer we had to pull the boat due to the drought and the lake we are on becoming very shallow. I kept the boat covered and stored it outside for the rest of the summer. When I went to take it to the Marina for winter storage I got a big surprise when I uncovered it. I had forgot to remove the plugs and the little bit of rain we had recieved had collected in the boat to carpet level i had a bit of mold and and a lot of frustration. So after a lot of cleaning I took it to the Marina where they went through the engine to see if I had water which I did not. I was told that I may run into some corrosion issues and some things may not show themsleves until next year(the current year) when i was running the boat again. After getting the boat out of storage and trying to clean it as best I could. It was time to do a quick start before I dropped it in the water entered my code and nothing. Checked all of my connections traced the power and I could trace it all the way to the starter but i was getting nothing out of the starter. Ordered a new one installed it still nothing. cleaned all of my connections still nothing ended up buying a new battery it fired right up probably didnt even need a new stater but I kept the old one put it in the box and but it on a shelf should I ever need that one (I must sound like an idiot not a guy whos been around boats my entire life however I may have taken for granted all the knowledge my old man had).

That brings us to this weekend i took the boat out yesterday morning to teach my GF how to ski boat ran great felt good no issues. A few hours later my mother wanted me to take her for a ride and as soon as I started it something didnt sound right it didnt want to fire right up when it finally did start it had a squealing noise and my volt meter was reading about 14 and usaully when the boat runs its around 16. When I dropped it into drive the sound went away and the power returened what I figured out is that the starter was not dis engaging while in nuetral but the bypass was working once in drive. Then I discovered my next problem the keypad would not shut off the boat, i even pulled the lanyard and the boat continued to run. with the lanyard off if i put it into drive the boat would die but as soon as i put it back to nuetral the boat woud instantly start back up. I had to use the toggle swith to shut off the boat. I asked my neighbor a few houses down (another Nautique owner and a knack for electrial) if he had any ideas he believed it might be the relay gone bad. He came checked it out but the relay checked out fine. The entire engine had power and could be jumped. after starting the enginge with the keypad and again having to shut off the power via the toggle switch I then lost all power to the front of the boat. I now believe this to be the toggle switch after reading some other threads about similair issues. if anyone could help it would be much appreciated could it be simply the toggle switch and the keypad could it be something different. i would hate to order the keypad if its just the toggle swith. unfortunatley the boat is at our weekend home and I wont be back till Wednesday to check any of this but if peopel tel me its a combination of both then I will order the Keypad and hopefully have a boat for this holiday weekend,

    My condolences on your father!

I think you are on the right track with the toggle switch. I remember reading similar symptoms to yours recently and I am pretty sure that is what it was. I did a quick search for the thread but didn't come across it. Good luck.

Thank you. Our lake house and boat is where we spent most of our time together as I got older. He was so proud and happy the day he bought this boat. I remember we went to "look" at it and it was already tagged Sold Rocha. Anyway this forum honestly has hopefully saved me a little time and aggravation hopefully some other people can look at it and agree with what I have diagnosed. I think the toggle switch is part of it just not sure if I need the keypad as well

Bypass the toggle switch. If that is not the problem then you will know definitively, and you will prevent yourself from having that particular problem in the future
