Just bought a 01 SAN team with the 320 hp 5.7 efi was seeing that these engines seem to be kinda rare just wondering if there's anything I need to be careful of with it and how reliable these engines are

You are correct, that engine option was pretty rare. Most SANs in that era got the Ford GT40. I don't know too much about your motor but I have never heard any bad things. Keep the oil at the right level and make sure the cooling system is doing its job and I think you should be fine for many more hours but hopefully somebody with experience with that engine can chime in.Shawn

If it's similar to the PCM 330 I have in my 05 SANTE then you have to take into account that it's right hand drive and runs backwards. I had a Brendella with a Ford that ran backwards and before I knew it, I bought a Ford pickup starter to replace the marine starter in a pinch and it took days to figure out that the reason it wouldn't fire was because my new starter was turning the engine the wrong way. The right handed prop will be another consideration. Items like these won't be in stock anywhere but maybe a Nautique dealer so be prepared to order and wait.

Hope you didn't run that pickup starter for long, not only because it was turning your engine backwards, but also because it wasn't a marine unit. That's asking for a fire.I own and operate Silver Cove Marine, which is an inboard boat restoration, service, and sales facility located in Mooresville, North Carolina. To the best of my knowledge, The Apex 5.7 engine turned clockwise, viewed from the front of the engine, with the flywheel away from you. That means if this engine is in a V-drive boat, you are behind the boat. The shifting transmission did not change rotation, but the V-drive did. Thus you ended up with a right hand propeller, with the driver balancing out prop torque.
It was an intermediate step engine between the throttle body injection GM 5.7 engine, and the Excalibur engine. I think the biggest problem with the engine was it did not have the remote oil filter, mounted on the exhaust manifold. And I think you can get a remote oil filter kit from PCM, and install it.
