How to change hardware out on glove/cooler box gas shock

I have looked everywhere but can not figure out how to get the hardware off the old gas shock to replace it with a new one I ordered for 97 super sport. It looks like it is suppose to pull out and up but I just can't figure it out, any help will be much appreciated? Thanks!

IIRC, get a small blade screwdriver and place under the spring metal u clamp and lift it back away from the ball. then the shock pops or falls off the ball.

That's exactly right. There's a metal "band" that wraps around the ends of the gas spring. Pull it off (about 1/2 way will do, but it doesn't matter since this is the old one) and then the spring will slide off of the balls.

To install the new one, just push the end onto the ball. No need to do anything else.
