    Temp reading with boat off

What should the temperature gauge read with the boat off? It's a 2000 SAN w/GT-40 and all the other gauges are pinned at the minimum (all the way on the left pin), but the temp gauge reads about 150. Is this right or do I need to figure out if the sender or gauge is bad? The boat is relatively new to me and I can't remember if this is the way it's always been.

    Thanks - Gene

Assuming you mean that the engine is off but that the ignition is on, the temperature gauge should still read the temperature on the engine. If the engine is cold, you should have the needle all the way to the left, if it is hot and at operating temperature, it will depend on your thermostat. I've seen boats that run at around 160 and other that run at 175/180.

Since you mention that all other gauges are pinned at the minimum and all the way to the left, I imagine that you have the ignition turned off. If the temperature gauge is reading 150, I would guess you have a problem with the temperature gauge. If the sender is bad the gauge should still have the needle all the way to the left if the ignition is turned off.

Do you have another reading other than 150 when the engine has reached its operating temperature? If with the engine off and at operating temp you have a constant 150 degrees (and based on the assumption above), I would point it to the temperature gauge.

Gene, when my engine is at operating temps, and then I shut her down the temp gauge reads between 150/160, then as soon I crank her back up she runs a little below 140 and stays there while running. Hope this helps sir. Mike 02 SN 196

Sorry Gene, I did not pay attention to the year on your boat. I do not know if my post above applies to that year boat. I apologize for the confusion.

That astyle gauge the needle stays at the temp it was at when shut off and will stay there until the gauge sees power coming to it when you engage the keypad.

nms1991 & SNMike were right on. As soon as I hit the start button, the needle drops down. I appreciate everyone not pointing out what a dumb question it was.

            Thanks again.
