2002 Sport Nautique won't start

After I turned on the master switch and punched in the three digit code the light at the right of the panel came on as usual. But when I then pushed the start button the red light on the left side of the panel and the warning light above came on for only an instant and then the system shut down (all lights out) like I had turned off the master switch. I then had to enter the code to get the light on the right side of the panel to come on again. I thought the battery might be low so I put the charger on it. It indicated fully charged but I left the charger on it for a couple of hours anyway. I tried again with the same result. Before I start tearing things apart I was hoping someone might have experienced something similar in the past that could point me to the solution.

Check the master switch. Those are famous for bad connections. Bypass it temporarily if necessary to test. Hopefully that's all it is (those are cheap). If it is the keypad, brace yourself...

Thanks for the information. This morning I pulled the master switch out so that I could check the connections and bypasses it, I got the same result when I bypassed the master switch. I also removed the key pad panel to check that connection and look for damage. The connection appeared good and there was no visible damage to the key pad. I did note that on that same key pad the button for the fan seemed to work fine but the button to the horn would only generate a chirping sound rather than the normal horn sound.

I will be ordering the key pad and I think with the low cost of the master switch I will replace that as well.

The other thing I would do is bypass the safety lanyard. If that fails then the boat will also not start. I just spliced the two purple ignition wires together, bypassing it entirely

ers906 Good thought on the safety lanyard. I pulled that switch and bypassed it as you mentioned and still got the same result. Time to order parts.

Sport Nautique on Keuka Lake

I received the parts today but won't be back to the lake until Friday to install. I expected to receive a master code and some instructions with the key pad on how to set the code. Is the code stored someplace else? Will the code I used before still work with this new key pad without having to reset it?

You should have gotten out the volt meter out and ohmed everything to check to see what was and wasn't working before you spent all that money on a new keypad. They are non-returnable unless defective. Hope at this point it is the keypad because if it isn't you're gonna be out quite a bit of money.

One other thing to check is the battery cable wire to clamp connection (at the battery terminal). I had the same symptoms the other day after relocating the battery and the main cable had loosened enough from the clamp that there was not enough contact to turn the engine over. Everything else worked. The new terminal clamp was less than $5.00 from auto parts store. Also had the lanyard go bad last year or the year before (same symptoms), I just rotated the switch to other poles, $0.00. Check both these before replacing the keypad as bhectus said. My boat is a 2000 sport/air, so I'm sure they are similar if not identical.

I had the same issues as rbalan, but one of my terminal connection points had cracked on the bottom. It would allow for small electronics to run, but when attempting to hit with high cranks the system would fail and I would start over. I also flipped my bildge switch at the same time to avoid further issues.
