    Squeaky Belt

    Hello -

i need some help..I get, from time to time, a squeaky belt when I start the boat. After driving for 5 minutes, I don't hear it for the rest of the day and weekend. Any idea on how to fix or tighten the belt? I am no that mechanically inclined but I have a brother who is.

Thanks for the help in advance.

    Thanks
    Phil

Depends on year and model of engine.

Id recommend you watch your brother check the belts so you can do it next time, or possibly even replace it after it snaps. If pumping gas is a 2 out of 5 on the difficulty scale, belt maintenance is a solid 2.5. It's also in the manual.

When I have a squeaky belt, I spray a little oil on it while the engine is running. Maybe some Remington gun oil or other stable lubricant.

Don't make a mess...it only takes a quick blast on the grooves....maybe with the red extension tube on the nozzle.

Never use silicon or "belt dressing"....in my experience, that just makes it worse.

ps - on that engine, there is no belt tension to adjust.

Could be your idler pulley bearing going out. I had a similar issue, went to autozone, looked up a similar GM 5.7 (PCM 330) and it took all of five minutes and $20.

Tool you are right! I have a little squeak so I hit the alternator and idler with some spray oil. Then fired it up hit the belt with dressing and it was twice as loud. Headed to parts house and got a new idler and belt. Will see what happens. BTW 343 idler pulley is a Gates 38009. About 18 bucks.
