I thought PCM started painting their engines black and switched valve cover styles in 1994... are you sure the boat isnt a '93?
That is the standard (not High Output) 351w with 240hp. Basic Prestolite distributor and Holley 600cfm marine 4160 carb... no Protec ignition or TBI system to worry about. Being the base engine, it might even be a reverse rotation matched to a 1:1 transmission... can you pull the ID off the engine tag?1990 Ski Nautique

I am worried now that it may be underpowered if its the 240hp and also that it is a 93 and wooden stringers. This is the link here. Remember the price is Australian dollars.

My '94 had that same engine. 240 HP is correct, I believe. It had plenty of power.I own and operate Silver Cove Marine, which is an inboard boat restoration, service, and sales facility located in Mooresville, North Carolina. Definitely a '94 or later, 94 was the year they went to the more rounded windshield like that has. Assuming it is the original hull decals, that would also suggest it is a '94 as that was the only year they had those block letter Nautique decals on the hull. (not my favorite). That boat will also definitely have composite stringers so not to fret, there is no wood.2002 Ski Nautique 5.7 GM Apex

Thanks for your help people. I have bought it and its now in the shed. It is in great condition and come from lake of pines in California. I have not water tested it yet as its cold and wet but hope to in the next day or so. I have always dreamt of owning a ski nautique and I am sure this will be the start of many more to come. I hope the waterskiing wake is good and maybe a little wakeboarding as well. Everything I have read says my choice may not be too bad. I would love to get a 97-00 SN but the are 10k more over here and the treasurer (wife) would not allow it. thank you for your help.

I have purchased and sold several boats without water test. The 2006 196 I have I found on this website and met the guy off 80 in Indiana. Did the deal in a parking lot. You just have to search out the right seller. Him and I talked several times. The boat turned out to be in better condition that he stated.

No water test here either. I would have liked to but just not practical. Just ran it in the driveway of the seller. It's all in the relationship or trust built in those interactions prior to the sale that gave me the comfort level with the seller, from this site. Pete we love the boat.1994 SNOB

Well i have had my first drive and water test and the grin could not be wider. This boat has 410 hrs on the hour meter and it feels like its just come off the factory floor. Every single gauge works, transmission is faultless and not having driver a Ski Nautique before I am pleasantly surprised. Possible just have to screw the idle up a little as its around 600rpm. The boat does pull a bit to the left but from all the info I have read this seems quite normal. It is incredibly quiet and I am quite happy with the power as the holeshot is quite good for the 240hp. It does have a bit of a rooster tail at around 32 mph but this may be due to the 4 blade OJ legend prop. Would going back to a 3 plade help resolve it? Tops out at around at 44mph @ just over 4000 rpm which is about what I expected.
All in all I am very happy.
